Job Description - Phlebotomist
- Part Time - 15 hours per week, days/times to be negotiated.
- Permanent Contract
- Pay depending on experience
We are looking for an experienced Phlebotomist to join our team, undertaking venepuncture as requested by other healthcare professionals. We are also happy to support any applicant who would be interested in progressing their career and wishing to attend training for an HCA role or Trainee Nursing associate.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and undertake venepuncture, under the supervision and guidance of qualified staff, to patients of Newtons Practice. They will also have administrative duties including phoning patients, data input using the clinical software Emis, and sending information to patients and other healthcare professionals.
The post holder will need to be an experienced phlebotomist with excellent communication skills.

Main duties:
To provide a safe and efficient phlebotomy service to patients by providing venepuncture services alongside the Medical, Nursing and Administrative teams.
To provide these services, the Phlebotomist will be required to participate in all necessary training and updates with assessments of competency as required and follow the Practices policies and directives.
The Phlebotomist will only undertake services that are covered by the relevant insurances and under the supervision of the nursing team.
The Phlebotomist will deliver these services in clinics with timely appointments made as required.
All procedures and actions will be documented as required and any concerns will be escalated to appropriate management.
Primary Responsibilities
- To undertake phlebotomy for adults and some children as appropriate to training, experience and competency and send to the laboratory
- To chaperone as requested
Secondary / Administrative Responsibilities
- To ensure the ordering of equipment when requested and the management of all clinical stock levels, rotation and ordering.
- To collect specimen ready for collection by hospital courier.
- To clean room/equipment to be used, according to cleaning schedule and record.
- To participate in checking toilets for cleanliness and stock.
- To ensure that the management of clinical waste and sharps bins is done safely and correctly.
- To attend and participate in nurse and Practice meetings when requested
- To ensure that all mandatory training is up to date.
- To escalate any significant events to a manager (good or bad) and complete a significant event form.
Health, safety and security
- Use the personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
- Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks
- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards reporting of any potential risks identified, including:
- hand washing
- universal hygiene procedures
- collection and handling of laboratory specimens
- segregation and disposal of waste materials
- decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
- reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
- dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
- Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
- Understand and apply the principles of the cold chain
- Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
- Be aware of statutory child health procedures and statutory local guidance and referral criteria
- Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining documentation, monitoring and maintaining of equipment and furniture within your area of responsibility
- Use the computer monitor safely
- Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Service improvement
- Be aware of and, if appropriate, assist in current clinical audit
- Work with colleagues in the team on the development of current and new services and other initiatives
- Deal with requests from patients and clinical staff for health information leaflets
Quality
- Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk in the care of patients
- Ensure own actions are consistent with clinical governance systems
- Practice in accordance with agreed standards of care
- Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the team
- Ensure stock items under your control are ordered and available in the treatment and consulting rooms
- Know how clinical governance affects the Phlebotomy role and bring to the attention of more senior staff any specific risk situation
- Know the practice's policies, especially the whistle-blowing policy, available in the practice staff handbook
- Be able to manage your own time effectively

Job Type: Part-time
Part-time hours: 15 per week
Salary: £20,982.00-£22,383.00 per year
