Main duties of the job

To be responsible for extracting blood samples in line with practice procedures and administering the processing of all blood sampling requests in an efficient and precise manner.

Phlebotomy duties include taking blood samples from patients, labelling tubes, and preparing samples for transportation to the laboratories in a timely manner.

Job Summary

Perform venipunture to obtain blood samples under supervision of the qualified Nursing Team and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The Phlebotomist will work collaboratively with the wider general practice team to meet the needs of patients.

Duties& Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Communicate effectively with other team members
  • Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are ready for collection in a timely fashion.
  • Adhere to local guidelines on the safe handling of sharps and sharp bins.
  • Ensure blood bottles, vacutainers and needles are all in date.
  • Ensure clinical areas are left in a safe and clean manner.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the GP/nurse of any significant patient issues
  • Keep up to date with new guidelines connected to venepuncture as required.
  • Performing Blood pressure and weight checks on patients when required for purposes on QOF and Chronic Disease Management.
  • Take responsibility for own development all learning and performance, including participating in supervision and annual appraisal
  • Undertake all mandatory training
  • Work with management on any new training requirements
  • To recognise and understand the roles and responsibilities of individuals working in the primary health care team
  • Carry out general admin tasks

Health, safety, and security:

Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks

Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards reporting any potential risks identified, including:

1. hand washing

2. universal hygiene procedures

3. collection and handling of laboratory specimens

4. segregation and disposal of waste materials

5. cleaning of clinical equipment

6. reporting and treatment of sharps injuries

7. dealing with blood and body fluid spillages

8. assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures

Awareness of the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate

Awareness of the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures

Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

Service improvement:

Work with colleagues in the team on the development of current and new services and other initiatives

Quality:

Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk in the care of patients

Ensure own actions are consistent with clinical governance systems

Practice in accordance with agreed standards of care

Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the team

Ensure stock items under your control are ordered and available in the treatment and consulting rooms

Awareness of how clinical governance affects the role of the Phlebotomist and bring to the attention of more senior staff any specific risk situation

Awareness of the practice's policies

Be able to manage your own time effectively

Clinical skills health and well-being:

Undertake, record, and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training:

Correctly identifying the patient, the sample requirements and printing both forms and labels

Ensuring samples are accurately labelled and dispatched for transportation the laboratories in a timely manner

Restocking and ordering of laboratory supplies

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratories

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions

Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence

Information processes:

Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using manual or computer systems as appropriate

Maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients, relatives, staff and the practice

Take the necessary precautions when transmitting information

  • Good IT skills
  • Be able to drive to carry out domiciliary phlebotomy visits

  • Experience of working in primary care
  • SystmOne software experience

We are a 6 site practice and the successful candidate must be willing to work across all sites, however we will endeavour to base at 2 sites at any one time

Pay depending on experience
