The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:
- Positioning the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement
- Driving innovations that change lives and sustain economic growth
- Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services
- R&D funding
For 2023, our priorities are:
- Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
- Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs – including by delivering world-class physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
- Put our public services – including the NHS and schools – at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of in-house STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.
- Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.
- Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our pro-innovation approach to regulating AI.
- Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

Job description
The Space Directorate hub brings together a range of roles and responsibilities to enable the directorate to operate flexibly, at pace and across the diverse range of interests and areas. With significant ministerial, stakeholder and media interest in the area it is vital that the Directorate's senior team are supported to a high standard. The role will provide support across a number of senior civil servants within the Directorate, as well as having a great opportunity to shape how we work as a team and how we engage with senior stakeholders across government.
Person specification
Provide administrative support to space Directorate SCS including diary and inbox management, ensuring the most efficient use of the senior management team's time in-line with their working styles. Confidently advise and respond to communication where appropriate.
Logistical support including preparing papers and briefing material in sufficient time before meetings and visits to a high standard. Room and travel bookings along with meeting setups.
Able to conduct day to day management and delegation of work to others along with taking an active part in corporate initiatives to support the wider objectives of the Department.
Strategize and forward plan, drawing up solutions to possible issues that may arise. Be proactive in independent decision making and anticipating what is needed.
Organise large-scale and possibly high-profile events in full including liaising with external and senior officials, being the point of call, delegating tasks and giving direction.
Reviewing and drafting briefings and submissions where needed.
Confidently engage with and build strong relationships with senior colleagues both through oral and written communication. Experience with working with senior colleagues is desirable.
Confidently able to work at pace, under pressure, and taking decisions in a fast-moving environment along with advising SCS on matters of their inbox.
Support the Directorate hub in the business management of the Directorate, leading corporate activities working closely with Directorate staff and teams in central finance, HR, comms etc working closely with the corporate Business Manager and Directorate hub.
Responsible for a distinct and specific area of work, requiring the need for specialist advice and guidance around developing and implementing ideas towards change and improvement. The content of this work will be at the discretion of the vacancy holder.- Confidently able to work independently on tasks and take the initiative along with developing the necessary knowledge to follow through on conversations.
Accompany SCS to meetings and visits and chair team meetings where needed, minuting, collating, sending and
Partner with staff across the directorate, UK Space Agency, BEIS and beyond to help the Directorate achieve its objectives by making connections and spotting opportunities deliver change.
Liaise with officials and stakeholders (including DG office, Ministerial Private Office and high-level external stakeholders), communicating clearly and concisely, both in writing and orally
Skills and experience
- Proactively able to plan ahead and make decisions based on knowledge and communication.
Flexible and able to prioritise multiple commitments at a fast pace. Able to adapt and react to last minute changes to plans.
Excellent communication skills both written and orally and able to confidently advise and voice opinions with colleagues and senior officials.
The ability to lead on tasks to support the wider group with autonomy and minimal direction.
Confidently able to develop strong relationships with senior colleagues and the Directorate, positively interacting with others and bringing motivation and enthusiasm to the role.
Organised, able to multi-task and deal well under pressure and to deadlines.
Excellent IT skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook and the ability to learn quickly how to manage the BEIS online travel booking system
The postholder is required to lead activities or projects which involve working through others to deliver and have experience of identifying opportunities to improve ways of working.
Handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.
Able to make confident judgements, taking the initiative on tasks and able to network to collate information and complete work.
