Job Description
BAE Systems in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a Competent Person III. The Competent Person ensures that all industrial activities occurring in confined and enclosed spaces are safe by performing atmospheric testing and physical hazard assessments. The Competent Person (CP) evaluates and tests various environments including but not limited to noise, illumination, atmospheric conditions (confined spaces), ensuring proper working environments are established and maintained. The CP populates and maintains department databases, archiving, report writing, maintaining files, etc. Performs work in a shipyard environment posing a variety of physically demanding situations and weather conditions. This position can require overtime as well as work on weekends and holidays.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Typically requires High School diploma or GED or the overall equivalent;
  • Current OSHA Maritime 10 Hour training required;
  • Shipboard experience required;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees, management, customers, subcontractors and regulatory agencies;
  • Ability to provide training to groups of various sizes;
  • Computer skills to include Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint);
  • Capable of working in a variety of physically demanding environments and weather conditions;
  • Able to support climbing, bending, crawling, working at heights, inside of enclosed and confined spaces, heat, rain, wind, etc.;
  • Must possess a valid driver's license;
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a government access badge;
  • Able to support overtime as required to include weekends and holidays.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • 24 Hour and annual 8 hour update for Shipyard Competent Person training;
  • OSHA 30 Maritime;
  • Associates degree in Occupational Safety and Health.
