PEER MENTOR
Hours: 37.5hours a week (normally 9-5, but flexibility required)
Salary: £23,409 per annum
Based at: Flintshire
Adferiad Recovery delivers a new, flexible, and co-ordinated response to the exceptional circumstances faced by people with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse conditions and related issues. We harness the talents and experience of our founding and long-established leading Welsh Charities CAIS, Hafal, and WCADA in their fields, enabling our projects to meet the needs of our most vulnerable with a single, unified, and comprehensive approach.

Project overview:
Cyfle Cymru is a Peer Mentoring project which helps people develop confidence to make positive life changes, and provides support to access training, education, volunteering and employment. Our peer mentors draw on their own lived experience to support people affected by substance misuse and/or mental health conditions. Cyfle Cymru will support people aged 16 to 24 (Not in education, employment or training) and those 25+ that are economically inactive or long term unemployed.
Job Purpose:
· Provide support and guidance to all participants that have been registered onto the project
· To develop ongoing action plans with participants which will be reviewed on a regular basis
· To provide one to one support and group activities to aid the development of a participant in their recovery
· Work alongside the team structure in delivering services and outcomes for the scheme
· To achieve project targets and outcomes set by Welsh Government
· To support the team leader and referral agents in raising awareness of the service
· To work in partnership with other practitioners to deliver effective interventions and support for people with Mental Health and/or substance misuse
· Provide support and supervision to volunteers
Responsibilities:
- To ensure all project outcomes are delivered on target.
- Assess candidates for suitability for further training and make appropriate referrals to internal and external agencies.
- Work alongside other organisations to gain the best outcome for the participant.
- Source training and employment opportunities for a caseload of participants with the support of the Employer Liaison Officer.
- Work with the team and volunteer peer mentors in bringing training and employment opportunities for participants to a positive outcome. This will include goal setting, development activities, CV writing, support with job applications, attendance at interviews and on-going placements.
- Utilise any other tools and techniques such as brief interventions and Adult Directions in assisting participants achieve their goals and objectives for the Peer Mentoring Scheme.
- Manage Volunteers in providing added value to the Out of Work Service.
- Provide ongoing support services to participants leaving the project.
- Record all activities in compliance with both organisational and Welsh Government regulations. This would include client registration forms, sessions records, timesheets and any other outcome monitoring required of the Scheme.
Client Work:
- To communicate skilfully and sensitively with highly complex and sensitive information, taking into account sensory and cultural barriers to communication.
- To have a good understanding of the difficulties that our client group face, be able to implement appropriate measures of support.
- To provide additional workshops to aid recovery of Substance misuse and/or Mental health.
- To provide one to one support to clients
- To provide group activities to promote independent living skills and aid the recovery of the participants
- To be a good Role Model to the client group
- To be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for development and progressions of the client group by providing details action plans and support to achieve the goals set out.
- To refer clients to other services within the partnership, and other external agencies as appropriate.
- The ability to prioritise and organise own workload
- To be accountable for own decisions and actions in consultation with supervision.
- To undertake clinical administrative tasks and reports relating to mentoring project when necessary.
Policy and service development:
- To adhere to agreed Health and Safety and Security procedures/policies.
- To adhered to Safeguarding policies and to ensure this is recorded effectively.
- To identify and contribute towards any aspects of the peer mentoring service where improvement can be made and to advise service and managers accordingly.
- To assist with the delivery of peer mentoring training if required.
Professional:
- To participate in the continuous learning within the Out of Work Service academy and Adferiad appraisal process.
- To operate within and observe partnership policies and procedures as amended and updated.
- To make regular use of supervision.
- To be responsible for working within own level of competence.
- To undertake internal and external training as appropriate, and as required as part of Continuous Professional Development.
- To develop and maintain professional working relationships with external agencies.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
Qualifications:
- BTEC Level 2 in Peer Mentoring or personal experience of substance misuse issues and/or mental health conditions
- A recognised qualification/ certificate or training in substance misuse or related field
- The ability to speak both Welsh and English
Experience:
- Personal experience of substance misuse issues and/or mental health conditions
- Experience of working with individuals who have/had substance misuse issues or Mental Health issues
- Experience of working in community-based services and with vulnerable client groups
- You will have an understanding of local substance misuse services and the benefits and challenges of service users
- Experience of multi-agency work
Skills:
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- To have the ability to communicate effectively with adult/ young people substance misusers/Mental Health to encourage positive engagement
- Ability to initiate and maintain effective communication and working relationships with a relevant range of people and agencies
- An ability to work in partnership with other practitioners to deliver effective interventions and support for adult substance misusers
- Be able to work to independently and as part of a team
- A good listener and confident

- Have good ICT skills and experience in the use of computers to input data
- An understanding of other key professionals, and how to contact them for consultation or referral
Knowledge:
- Awareness of the issues of confidentiality arising when working with adults and substance misuse
- Knowledge of child protection and working practice to safeguard vulnerable people
- Knowledge of safe working practice appropriate to the work
- Knowledge of local treatment services for substance misusing adults, what they offer and how to contact them
Requirements:
- Full driving licence and full access to a vehicle for work purposes
- Be prepared to undergo a DBS check
- Welsh language skills
