Job description
We are looking for a graduate or school leaver to join us as a Payroll Trainee, with full support in completing a professional qualification.
The role
The candidate will be allocated their own portfolio of clients, processing multiple payrolls and the role will involve:
- Process all payrolls from start to finish
- Starters, Leavers and Permanent data changes
- Process variable data from clients
- Manage multiple deadlines for variable data and managingclients throughout their pay cycle
- Report processing and sending to clients
- Liaise with client and dealing with salary queries
- Completing monthly pension returns
- Dealing with queries from the client and HM Revenue & Customs
- Processing and calculating statutory payments such as SMP, SSP etc.
- Manually calculating pro-rata payments such asholiday pay, hourly/daily rates of pay etc. Keeping abreast of new legislation, supporting the team implement new procedures
- Ad hoc tasks as required

The team
Our team in Peterborough advises a wide range of commercial businesses, private individuals and not-for-profit organisations throughout the UK. We have strong links with the professional and financial community in Peterborough and the surrounding area.
Our client base is diverse and features large international groups, as well as UK head quartered owner-managed, middle market and smaller businesses, across a number of sectors, including private and landed estate clients.
We work with our clients to create integrated, cross service line solutions for both their businesses and personal financial affairs. In other cases, we apply our expertise to their specific concerns, often working alongside other professionals in the process.
The successful candidate shall join a busy payroll department of eleven (one director, one manager, two assistant managers, five payroll seniors, one semi-senior and one trainee). The team work cohesively and support each other in order to achieve client demands.
You
- Minimum grade 6 (B) in English Languageand Maths GCSE
- Good IT skills, with the ability toquickly learn new softwarei.e. payroll software.
Salary/Benefits
- A 35-hour working week with flexibility around the core hours of 10am-4pm, in line with the firm’s comprehensive agile working policy.
- Paid overtime or time off in lieu (pre-approved and only where required).
- Paid study leave.
- 25 days annual leave with an additional day added after 5 years’ service. In addition, under the flexible benefits programme, employees are entitled to buy or sell up to 5 days holiday a year, subject to staff partner approval. Working from home allowance.
- Eligibility for the firm’s Profit-Sharing Plan that runs from October to September each year. The scheme enables staff to share in the profits of the firm.
- Salary reviews annually in October.
- 6 month probationary period.
