We are looking for someone who can proof-read and edit clinical correspondence, supporting our fantastic General Surgery clinicians to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients. You will be the first point of contact for patients so need to have a calm and empathetic nature and be able to use initiative to deal with any queries from either patients or the clinical teams. In addition you will learn about the pathways for both routine elective patients and cancer patients and understand where patients are in their journey, ensuring any diagnostic tests are ordered and liaising with the consultants to ensure that they are aware of results, minimising delays to patients being given these results and moving on to the next stage of treatment. It is a busy department where there is always something new to learn. We can promise you will never be bored!

Hours are 20 per week.

  • Provide a complete medical administrative service including RTT, patient correspondence and editing and formatting letters.
  • Liaising with Nurses, Doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team including Inpatient / Outpatient Bookings teams to provide a quality service for the patients.
  • To provide a first point of contact, answering all telephone enquiries, taking and relaying messages in a polite and helpful manner, and using own judgement to establish the priority of issues and taking action as appropriate.
  • To be aware of the importance of doctors completing discharge summaries and outcome forms in a timely manner.
  • To make best use of information technology, i.e. Windows software, CernerMillennium (patient data software) and other hospital systems and to be proactive and flexible with the changing technology as this becomes available.
  • To assist in the fast track treatment for patients with cancer and to ensure referrals to other healthcare professionals are forwarded promptly.
  • Administration of the referral to treatment patient pathway (RTT) including checking patient outcomes are recorded accurately on CernerMillennium and ensuring incorrect coding is rectified.
  • To check outpatient appointments are requested and surgical procedures are ordered on CernerMillennium so that patients appear on a waiting list
  • Reviewing letters, outcome forms and other documentation to confirm RTT clock start and stop dates when required.
