Food and Beverage Assistant – Sheffield S5 7AU
£10.37 Monday-Friday, Saturdays - £14.62 Sundays/Bank Holidays - £18.97 per hour plus accrued holiday pay

This is a bank catering assistant role, based at the Northern General Hospital/ Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. This is a Band 2 position paying £10.37 - £18.97 per hour and subject to an enhanced DBS check. You will be required to produce photo identification at interview stage.
Hours: Rota basis over Monday-Sunday 20 hours, and this is an ongoing temporary role. The following shift times are available:
· 3:30pm to 7:30pm
The Role: The Patient Food and Beverage Assistant will be responsible for the patient food services at ward level, providing nutrition and Hydration to patients and aid ward staff. It is essential that staff who work in a catering environment hold a Food Safety certificate.
- Undertake tablet menu ordering for patient meal requirements, ensuring all patients receive a meal correct to their needs, checking of dietary requirements, allergens etc.
- Part of a ward-based team responsible for the provision of food and beverage service to in patients.
- To regenerate food, maintaining appropriate temperature records and serve meals following advice from clinical staff.
- Responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of kitchen and serving area, including crockery, cutlery, kitchen utensils and food trolley.
- Ensure adequate provisions are supplied to ward kitchen area and maintain appropriate records relating to stock control.
- To fully prepare for service breakfast lunch and evening meal for patients at ward level.
- Assist with ward food service to patients as required.
- Dependant on ward, responsible for collecting, returning, and cleaning of patient meal trolleys.
- Ensure all items for patient meal service to include correct crockery, condiments, serviettes etc are ready to commence service and that patients are offered these.
- Prepare the right amount of custard, gravy and sauces ready for service.
- Ensure patient’s bedside tables are free of clutter prior to each meal service.
- Assist with each meal service through portioning of food according to patient requirements and present food in an appetising manner.
- Responsible for clearing and cleaning of all crockery and cutlery after each meal service.
- Responsible for the cleaning of all equipment located in the ward kitchen or zone. Clean and sanitise all kitchen areas to include touch points daily following correct procedure.
- Undertake daily completion of any required documentation to include food temperature, fridge temperatures and food wastage, cleaning schedules and estates maintenance records.
- Replenish water jugs regularly throughout the day.
- Prepare beverage and snacks trolley and deliver service to patients at the agreed times throughout the day.
- Ensure any dietetically prescribed snacks are given to patients. Responsible for cancelling snacks as necessary.
- As required, prepare thickened fluids for patients.
- Ensure patients have access to food and beverages at any time of day and prepare as necessary. This to include the 24/7 ward kitchen service, ring back and light bite/snack box service.
- Responsible for recording waste and reasons for food wastage.
- Check fridge twice daily and remove any un-labelled, out of date food and record wastage.
- Record ward kitchen fridge and meal trolley temperatures as per Department protocol Participate with ward teams in meal safety huddles. Inform nursing staff of any patients not eating/drinking.
- Deliver the service to patients with efficiency, courtesy, and friendly manner.
- Undergo all training as required. To include updates, refresher, mandatory and statutory.
- Participate in the Trust appraisal process and contribute to a personal development plan.
- Follow all Trust Guidelines on Health and Safety to work in a safe manner with regards to Codes of Practice.
The skills required are
- ·Good comprehension of English and ability to communicate clearly / English GCSE or Equivalent.
- Experience in a catering / carer or similar role
- Food Safety Certificate or equivalent experience and willingness to complete Level 2 Food Hygiene
- Excellent customer service
- Reliable and hard working
