POSITION SUMMARY

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) provides hands-on care and performs patient care and other related technical and clinical support activities as directed by the Licensed Nurse. Specific tasks vary within the Hospital units, but aspects of a patient’s essential daily functions may include, but not limited to the following: eating, dressing, bathing, answering calls bells, delivering messages, serving meals, making beds, and tidying up rooms. Also, observation of the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reports any change to the Nurse assigned to the patient’s plan of care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Care: Obtain report on patients. Remain current regarding patient's care to comply with specific assignments as changes may occur due to the patients care plan. Provides appropriate basic nursing care and treatment procedures on assigned patients as directed by the Licensed Nurse. Perform skills which include observation and documentation of vital signs, I & O, weight, height, skin condition and elimination of assigned patients. Feed patients when required. Pass water, linens, and nourishments. Follow established procedure to obtain Blood Glucose Finger Sticks as directed by RN.

Communication: Communicates with patients/families, and coworkers to promote effective relationships. Reports change in patient's condition immediately and offer problem solving options to the Nurse and communicate other patient changes throughout the shift to the Nurse assigned to the patient's care plan. Clearly communicates and performs responsibilities in a cooperative, respectful, positive and helpful manner while receiving guidance from the Nurse responsible for the patient's care plan. Assist patients, family members or other clients with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner. Refrains from personal conversations with coworkers in the presence of patients/family members. Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents so follow up-and/or prevention can occur. Answer and refer telephone calls or other inquires to ensure accurate and timely communication are facilitated.

Safety & Security: Provides for safety and security needs of patients and staff. Demonstrate use of Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques when caring for agitated or violent patients. Maintains current CPI certification. Promptly responds to unsafe incidences to secure patient and protect their wellness. Possess/demonstrates knowledge of emergency response actions by cooperatively responding and assisting quickly to call bells or any other emergency alarm. Always uses proper body mechanics. Consistently uses the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Record/report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment and remove any faulty equipment from service.

Customer Service: Projects a positive-can do attitude with a keen sense of awareness and responds effectively to ensure the safety of all patients. Provides emotional support and treats patients/families/coworkers/visitors with courtesy and respect for their unique and individual needs, opinions, beliefs, values and discomforts. Asks customer, "Can I do anything else?" Offers system improvement suggestions and shares possible solutions via appropriate process. Takes responsibility for his/her own actions while avoiding negative practices of defensive reaction or justification. Keeps customer informed. Stays calm under stress and reacts appropriately. Demonstrates compassion by engaging in active listening and using appropriate tone of voice that is respectfully received by the recipient. Looks and listens for ways to improve every aspect of customer service. Understands what he/she is authorized to do to satisfy a customer.

Documentation: Documents basic patient care and procedures on assigned patients utilizing appropriate forms. Documents all observations indicated within the role of the Patient Care Associate (PCA) on appropriate forms and within specified time frames to ensure quality patient care.

Meals: Assists patients with meals including positioning, meal set up, and protective clothing when patients desires. Engages with patients to enhance dining experience; avoid personal conversations with other co-workers in the presence of patients.

Transfers: Transfers patients using proper body mechanics. Always follows two person transfer policy when utilizing a mechanical lift. Always has on their person a gait belt and uses appropriately and when indicated.

Infection Control: Consistently utilizes accepted techniques of infection control. Adheres to standard universal precautions: Proper hand hygiene, Proper glove use, Isolation Policies & Procedures (P & P), Proper disposal of PPE. Assist in cleaning kitchen, nursing station, clean and dirty utility rooms, shower rooms, supply closets, locker rooms, patient dining room etc.

Staff Meetings: Attends unit staff meetings and signs validating they have read and understand information to be applied in the working environment.

Attendance: Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Follows attendance policy. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized time system correctly.

Education: Attends 100% of mandatory meetings and additional training as required by department/position.

Other: Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

General Activity: Stand, walk, sit, drive.

Motion: Bend, squat, crawl, climb, reach, lift, carry , push. Use of right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot. Precise motor function: right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot.

Weight lifted/force exerted: Up to 1/3 of time more than 100 pounds, 1/3 or more time more than 100 pounds.

Body Fluid exposure: yes.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Well-lighted, well-ventilated work areas.
  • Physically engaged to include, but not limited to the following: Sits, stands, walks, bends and stoops throughout the work day; required to lift up to 20 lbs independently using safe lifting practices.
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids and infections.
  • Deals with residents, families and staff under often stressful conditions.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or equivalent education required.
  • Previous hospital Patient Care Associate (PCA) experience, current certified nursing assistant (CNA) and/or emergency medical technician (EMT) license preferred but ot required. Nursing student who has completed the fundamentals or introduction to nursing course will be considered. Behavioral health experience preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and interprets verbal and written communications using the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
