GENERAL SUMMARY:
Summary:
The Patient Care Technician II (PCT II) position is responsible for a wide variety of technical and clerical procedures. PCT II has frequent direct patient contact when performing phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen transport. Utilizes computers for patient’s specimen ordering, accessioning and general data entry. The PCT II provides front line oversight and training of PCT 1 staff, students and new hires.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Assists PCT 1 co-workers with difficult patients and heavy workload.
2. Ensures new co-workers or students are assisted with any questions regarding training.
3. Provides instruction on new methods and/or instrumentation. Trains new employees and students. Documents all instruction completed on assigned employees training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift.
4. Independently performs and documents all tasks and procedures including phlebotomy, specimen collection, waived testing and processing of specimens according to established policies and protocols while maintaining accuracy in all job functions.
5. Verifies the identity of patient/specimen, accurately enters data and completes all required documentation. Identifies, investigates, and communicates appropriately all unusual/unexpected results or situations. Consults appropriate personnel regarding all difficulties, technical questions or unresolved problems.
6. Registers/schedules patients and tests.
7. Performs all tasks, procedures, and documentation within established standards for timeliness without reminder. Follows through on all outstanding tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks and reports any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service.
8. Demonstrates and maintains proficiency on all computer software and systems.
9. Ensures all Infection Prevention / Safety protocols are followed at all times, disinfects work areas prior to end of each shift.
10. Assists coworkers at all times with any difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload.
11. Maintains adequate supplies according to established PAR levels for department. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift. Recognizes low inventory situations and alerts appropriate personnel for re-order in a timely manner.
12. Completes QA, QC and PI, as needed.
13. Distributes patient results, as needed.
14. Demonstrates competency in completing a Safety variance.
15. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities
16. For DI Departments: Performs all lab collections and sends routine specimens to the lab per site/department protocol.
17. For DI Departments: For collection at home ensures that the proper container is given to the patient. Ensures all drop off samples are registered, properly labeled with the correct specimen tube/containers were collected.
18. For DI Departments: Assit with technical procedures according to established Diagnostic Imaging policies and procedures.
19. For DI Departments: Schedules and obtains authorizations for breast procedures
20. For DI Departments: Enters and releases Mammography / Ultrasound information from Mammography tracking software program.
21. For DI Departments: Obtains prior images, history/ physicals and Med Reconciliation/ list for interventional cases prior to their arrival for the RN to review Once patient arrive takes patients vital signs prior interventional cases
22. For DI Departments: Sets-up room using Sterile Technique for Biopsy Exams and assists the Physician during biopsy procedures
23. For DI Departments: Performs and processes quality EKGs / Monitors non critical in patients for MRI that are on telemetry monitoring
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:
- Education Certificate Program
Phlebotomy
Or Certificate Program in EKG, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Medical Lab Sciences, or Nursing Assistant. - Credential Basic Life Support
Nationally Registered Certified Phlebotomy Technician
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Employed at Bayhealth for at least 1 year as a PCT1 or equivalent experience in other healthcare settings.
