1. JOB DESCRIPTION

  • JOB TITLE: COUNTY WILDLIFE SITE RANGER

1.2 SALARY: £23,400 per annum pro rata

1.3 LOCATION: Roadford Lake office base with home working as agreed with line manager. Travel to sites over the southwest will be required.

1.4 HOURS: 18.75 hours per week to include weekends, Bank Holidays and evenings.

1.5 DURATION: 12 months (September REPLACEMENT_STRINGAugust 2024)

1.6 RESPONSIBLE TO: Ecologist

  • OVERALL ROLE PURPOSE

Working with South West Water and SW Lakes to deliver Water Industry National Environment Programme obligations, you will deliver habitat management interventions to enhance biodiversity to improve the ecological condition of our County Wildlife Sites.

  • THE ROLE Our rangers work around lakes and reservoirs within the southwest of England; they focus on land and property of public interest and/or of designated conservation importance.
  • Our rangers deliver the essential tasks necessary to protect biodiversity and ensure that our managed landscapes will be abundant, diverse and connected. They help ensure compliance with statutory aspects such as the Conservation, Access and Recreation Code of Practice, as well as compliance with our Integrated Management Plans.
  • Our rangers operate in outdoor environments and largely independently, often lone working on and around deep water, as well as in small teams. Lone working for extensive periods requires individuals that are responsible and resilient.
  • Our rangers need to be comfortable working outdoors in all weather and being fit to work in these conditions whilst ensuring all risk assessments and lone working policies (where applicable) are followed.
  • This role is focused on our County Wildlife Sites and delivering habitat management interventions to enhance biodiversity to improve ecological condition and water quality.
  • Our rangers work within a supportive and skilled team and this role will be part of our Environment Team.
  • KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Take responsibility for selected habitat management work such as meadow cutting, coppicing, tree planting, and scrub control on our County Wildlife Sites. These habitat management works are detailed in our Integrated Management Plans. * All habitat management works are to be clearly communicated to the line manager which will aid progress reporting for the management of our County Wildlife Sites.

  • Work closely with our Environment Team to report on any conservation concerns such as invasive non-native species.
  • Take responsibility for the proper care and maintenance of equipment and vehicles that are used.
  • Organise and prioritise habitat management work to an agreed timeframe and quality.
  • Where appropriate, assist contractors, volunteers and other members of the Environment Team in conservation activities.
  • Undertake mandatory training and development as required by the Trust.
  • Ensure that you comply with Trust procedures to manage risk to the public, self, other staff, volunteers and contractors. Ensure that high quality risk assessments are carried out in line with Trust guidance for works you are undertaking and supervising and monitor compliance with safety procedures.
  • Carry out other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Trust.
