We are looking for at least two paralegals to support our social welfare solicitors.
The Social Welfare Department undertakes housing, community care, public law and Court of Protection welfare work. TV Edwards LLP seeks to appoint at least two paralegals to support our social welfare solicitors who carry out a range of housing, community care and public law work as set out above. Most of our work is funded by legal aid but we also fund cases by way of Conditional Fee Agreements and private fees.
Role Overview
As a paralegal in our social welfare team, you will be working for clients with a range of needs, some of whom are in very vulnerable situations such as facing eviction or a lack of community care services. Your support will be crucial in ensuring our clients can have full access to justice. Successful candidates will be based in our Whitechapel and Clapham Junction offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out all allotted casework, promptly and efficiently as delegated by solicitors or trainees.
- Completing bundling for court bundles as directed, including collating papers and drafting indexes of papers.
- Clerking and attending court hearings, with counsel where appropriate.
- Carrying out allocated administrative tasks such as completing funding applications, contacting barristers and experts for invoices and clients for instructions, arranging appointments and managing entries in solicitor’s diaries.
- Communicating clearly and regularly with clients, complying with ‘client care’ requirements.
- Staffing the new client rota for the process of coordinating and administering the allocation of new client calls under the management of the Heads of Department. This includes taking details of potential new cases from individuals and referring agencies via telephone and email correspondence.
- Keeping up to date with general legal developments.
- Ensuring that time spent on all casework is promptly and accurately recorded.
- Billing tasks for the administration of billing and liaising with the in-house billing team as delegated by the solicitor.
- Undertaking appropriate administrative tasks in accordance with the Office Manual to help ensure smooth functioning of department and efficient casework and billing.

- Excellent IT skills (including word processing and use of Excel spreadsheets)

- Law degree (or equivalent)

Salary and Application Submission
Salary: £24,000 per annum
Anticipated start: September 2023

Hours: full-time – 35 hours per week; 9.30am-5.30pm Monday–Friday.
