What we seek :
OCHC is currently seeking a dedicated Paralegal to help our organization by providing support with assigned Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) cases under the supervision of legal counsel. Reporting to the assigned L awyer, the Paralegal will also provide administrative support services to the LTB function of the Legal Services team.
Paralegal with OCHC:
Ensuring that the organization is following the law in its mission to help families and individuals find a place they call home is a main priority for OCHC. As the Paralegal, you will be at the forefront of this objective by using your expertise to support our Legal Services team while making a difference in the lives of our tenants every day.
As a Paralegal, you will:
Manage carriage of assigned LTB legal files from commencement of legal action to completion , including communication with witnesses , monitoring deadlines, and more
Prepare documents and evidence ; prepare clients and witnesses for appearances at the LTB or court.
Represent OCHC at LTB hearings , including negotiating and mediating agreements and addressing interim matters
Assist Lawyer with Court hearings
Coordinate enforcement of LTB orders with the Sheriff’s office and appropriate internal staff
Record all relevant information
Conduct research
Maintain an accurate record of all requests for legal actions
Prepare reports on department for legal counsel
Assist in maintaining and updating databases and files
Coordinate meetings for L awyers

What you bring:
Education & Experience :
A typical candidate will have the following qualifications and experience. Exceptional candidates with different qualifications will be considered at the discretion of the employer if demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability warrant.
College diploma in a Paralegal program
Licensed with the Law Society of Ontario as a Paralegal
A minimum of three (3) years experience representing clients at the Landlord and Tenant Board
Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, and Small Claims Court
Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, Landlord and Tenant Board Rules, practice directions, and guidelines
Understanding of various socio- economical issues present in OCH tenant communities
Knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, database applications, and other standard corporate software
Knowledge of legal research online resources such as Quicklaw , Westlaw, and Canlii
Experience as a legal assistant in a litigation context is an asset
Experience working for a social housing provider is an asset
Bilingualism is an asset
