En Route International operates globally as part of dnata, one of the world’s largest combined air services providers. We specialise in the complete development and delivery of on-board food and service solutions. Drawing upon the abundance of innovation from our in-house team of Design, New Product Development and Logistics experts, we create tailored food and service solutions for our customers around the globe focusing predominantly on the travel market.
The Senior Designer will report into the Design Manager and support with project/team management. They will be responsible for ensuring a high standard of supervision and leadership by being a role model and bringing a high level of brand and packaging expertise to set an example for others to follow.
As a brand, En Route positions itself as an innovation led company; the Design team supports the NPD (new product development) team and the wider sales team in bringing new product ideas to life.
The candidate will meet the objectives of the Design team through the development of packaging, branding, and product design concepts to sell to new and existing customers.
Responsibilities:
- Taking initial briefs through the full design process from concept to delivery.
- Creation and development of packaging structures and product design concepts using available resources and materials.
- Creation of new brand treatments and the development of trademarked, corporate brands.
- Artworking brand treatments across multiple pack formats, including back of pack technical information.
- Creation and application of designs to other marketing materials such as En Route stationery, social media, and advertisement.
- Creation of bespoke client presentations and mock-ups using the in-house studio equipment to present ideas/executions for approval.
- Product photography and editing.
- Support with the management of the design studio including weekly upkeep, and tracking material and ink stock levels.
- Occasional 3D Design and prototyping management with suppliers.
- Support Design Manager with approving artworks and attending press passes.
- Maintain the high visual standard En Route sets and assist others in maintaining this standard.
- Strong understanding of the environmental impact of our industry and the opportunities within design and material choices to improve this.
- Working with suppliers to proactively work on packaging and service development opportunities as well as support the wider business with sourcing new, more sustainable materials.
- Managing product development projects both individually and as part of the wider team, and reporting status/progress to the Design Manager.
- Responsible for training, coaching, and mentoring new and existing team members.
Support En Route Digital Communications by:
- Taking and editing photos as needed for website/social media/e-Newsletters.
Support the wider Sales Team by:
- Creating bespoke presentations for larger client presentations including digital, printed and all product development.
- Attending sales meetings and presenting new ideas or concepts.
- Taking and editing product photos for presentations.
- Creating eye-catching displays for client presentations.
- Helping with sample requests as needed.
Participate in Exhibitions by:
- Developing new ideas to showcase and display at our annual show.
- Attending exhibitions and managing the stand area, greeting and liaising with customers, as well as assisting with set-up and set down of displays.
- Attend design, material, and socio-economic exhibitions both in the UK and abroad when necessary to do so.

Design Skills Required:
Adobe packages:
Must be fully conversant in the following:
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe In-design
- Acrobat Pro
Any other Adobe software knowledge would be an asset.
3D Packages:
- Any ability using 3D modelling and rendering software isn’t essential but would be advantageous (particularly Rhino 3D or SolidWorks).
Sketching and Illustration Ability:
- To communicate or start the development of a new product, there is often a requirement to demonstrate ideas through sketching. Hand illustration for packaging decoration and branding would also be an advantage.
Mock-up and Model Making:
- Ability to create mock-ups of packaging concepts is a vital skill for the role, using our plotter and CAD cutter equipment in our in-house Design studio.
Trend Research:
- Gathering trend information using our data platforms and analysing it to help inform creative briefs is an essential skill.
Person Specification
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly creative thinker, pro-active, positive, and forward thinking.
- High attention to (design) detail and accuracy skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to motivate and inspire others.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Demonstrable previous experience working within a demanding environment, liaising with senior stakeholders, and prioritising a busy workload.
- Ability to respond to any given briefs and to generate ideas within tight deadlines.
- Ability to assist junior designers when needed to deliver their project deadlines with a successful result. Particularly where the Design Manager and/or Creative Director aren’t available.
- Flexibility to take on extra and varied tasks when required. To be flexible, with a can-do attitude, towards all aspects of the role.
- Ability to confidently present ideas and concepts to clients both in the UK and overseas.
- UK driver’s license and ability to drive to press passes would be advantageous.
