Job description
We have an exciting opportunity for a caring and dynamic person to work with a an 11 year old young man. He has autism and is non verbal, but he does understand simple directions and conversations. He is an absolutely lovely person who engages really well with activities he finds interesting and enjoyable, so we are looking for someone who will teach him to play, help his sisters engage and play with him to enable him to be a part of his family. He is generally very compliant, and will indicate whether he is interested by joining in, or walking away. He enjoys sensory stimulation, so loves play that makes a noise (like pasta kerplunk), music and playing instruments, puzzles to help his hand/eye coordination as well as liking different textures like water and messy play. He also loves trampolining. If he cannot be understood or is not wanting to engage, he can exhibit some challenging behaviour; he may try to grab or he might throw toys so you need to be confident to manage this following clearly identified management strategies. This behaviour is very rare.
He requires support on Friday and Saturday between 4.30 - 9.30. We are willing to consider a job share so there could be some scope for flexibility to mix up the days to accommodate any personal needs. The client also has an additional 4 hours per week to use during school holidays, these could be covered by whichever PA is available.
The role will involve working with him and his siblings at home, but also to take him to the park, which is a short walk from his home. He will hold hands and is very easy and safe to take out. His OT will work with any PA through their induction to show them how to engage with him, how to use play that has been devised for him and to support with initial outings until the PA feels confident. This role will be fully supported by the professionals involved with him so that we can get the maximum benefit for him.
There is no personal care requirement, just play and have fun. Driving is not needed.
Hourly rate is £10.50 per hour.
This role will require an enhanced DBS check, which will be provided.
