Orthotics assistant
The Orthotics Dept. at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital Oswestry is looking for an enthusiastic and well motivated person to work as an Orthotic Assistant to help both clinically and with paperwork in Orthotic clinics. The position is for 4 days a week - Tues to Fri and will be based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays and The Princess Royal Hospital on Thursday's.
Hours will be 8-5pm everyday except Friday which will be 8-4pm
Full training will be provided.
The assistant will work alongside a professionally registered Orthotist assisting with their clinical duties and the running of clinic. They will assist in moving patients from waiting rooms to clinic rooms and assisting the patient in getting ready for their appointment. They will also assist with paperwork, stock management and ordering, tel review calls to patients and raising purchase orders.

Job Purpose
To assist and support the Orthotist’s to carry out Orthotic treatment for patients.
To have a full understanding of all orthoses, the prescription requirement of every orthosis, the biomechanical aim and complete commercial product awareness.
To manage stock control and undertake quarterly stock takes
Undertake patient tel review appointments and service maintenance of orthoses
To clinically check patients’ orthoses prior to Xray
To prep ready for clinic, close down following clinic and ensure clinical environment safe and fully stocked
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Prepare and close up clinic rooms ready for and after Orthotics clinics, before and after every clinic – cleaning, equipment prep, paperwork, equipment set up, patient information literature, PPE etc
2. Assist in Orthotic appointments with paperwork, manual handling, casting/scanning, chaperoning, assisting pt’s undressing and dressing, guiding pt’s in and out of clinic rooms for appt’s
3. Manual handling – assisting when required for patient positioning and casting and also independently managing hoisting pt’s
4. Assisting patients with toileting
5. Assisting out-patients with toileting assistance as required.
6. Writing patient prescriptions for repeat and repair of orthoses
7. Completing patient note entries for repeat and repair of orthoses and for collection of goods
8. Assisting Orthotists in different physical locations – theatres, off site clinics, schools
9. Assisting the Orthotist in any duty required under guidance.
10. Assisting organising transport for patients and supporting pt’s whilst they are awaiting hospital
transport
11. Completing patient excel spreadsheets
12. Independently management of all stock at all clinical sites and all clinic rooms, and remote MDT clinic settings
13. Independently undertake quarterly stock takes.
14. Attend and partake in Orthotics assistant meetings and take minutes of Orthotic Assistant meetings compiling an action log
15. Attend and partake in dept weekly meetings
16. Plan, organise and book all visits from sales representatives of external companies for Orthotists
17. Compile and account for product reviews clinically undertaken, collating, saving and reporting feedback centrally.
18. Keep literature and catalogues from external companies up to date at all clinical sites
19. Plan and organize their own day to day tasks and activities
20. Communicate with clinical, clerical and technical staff at all times in the dept
21. Assist in audit
22. Assist in data gathering and recording
23. Independently undertake patient telephone review clinics assessing if treatment has been successful post supply of orthoses and recommending reviews if required.
24. Assess, obtain and record clinical outcome measures and scores from patients
25. Cleaning of entire dept in all areas – clinical and administrative
26. Taking orthoses to and from the orthotics workshop that require alteration by a technician, and independently managing done on day repairs direct with patients.
27. Sealing casts and processing digital scans
28. Undertake a repair and repeat clinic
29. Manage patient literature in all waiting rooms
30. Technical data download from orthoses into software systems
31. Department first aiders
32. Assist the Orthotists with presentations and events
33. Assisting Orthotists measuring patients
34. Independently undertaking dept audits for BBE, hand hygiene, fire, environment
35. Independently undertake face to face patient pre x ray appointment clinic checks with patient
36. Manage patient servicing of orthoses to ensure legally compliant, instigating initial request and managing non-compliance.
37. Falls and manual handling leads for the dept.
