Job description
This is a unique opportunity for an optoelectronic senior researcher to work in a leading industrial research environment. At Microsoft Research@198 we undertake world-leading, ambitious projects to transform the world through deep innovation. They will work with world class engineers and researchers at 198 and across Microsoft product teams to help create disruptive solutions at the intersection of the modern cloud and AI. This stimulating environment is the ideal place to grow their practical skills and challenge their ingenuity.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will have a can-do and open minded attitude and be prepared to work within a rapidly changing research environment, while simultaneously taking a rigorous and systematic approach to design and debug with high attention to detail.
They will be able to envisage, architect, explore multiple designs, and then take a hands-on approach to creating prototypes and proof-of-concepts. They will be able to work with researchers both in photonics and other related fields (such as optics, electronics, networking, machine learning and computer science), feeding back results and experience as well as learning about, considering, and understanding the additional constraints to find good solutions to difficult problems.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics with focus on photonics
- Strong expertise in Silicon Photonics, photonics integrated circuit (PIC) design, layout, and fabrication, optical simulation and device characterization, including high-speed optical/RF design simulation and measurements.
Preferred qualifications (one or more of the following)
- Hands-on experience with optical lab components and instruments (e.g., lasers, free-space assemblies, high speed oscilloscopes, probestations, etc)
- Ability to automate lab measurements, scripting knowledge in Python/MATLAB, and some rudiments of statistical analysis
- Experience with MPW runs or custom runs with photonics foundries
- Knowledge of electronics and CMOS design
- Signal processing- mixed signal, digital, sampled systems, theoretical analogue analysis in Matlab/Python and simulation in Ansys/Spice
- PCB assembly and prototype construction
