Job description
.
This is an opportunity to join the Farnborough Wind Tunnel Engineering Team who provide a world-class testing service to our customers which plays an important part in the development of the next generation of aircraft. Over the past 20 years, the work carried out at QinetiQ has helped to deliver market-leading aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X.
The QinetiQ 5m Wind Tunnel remains at the forefront of low speed aerodynamic testing. The combination of large test section and pressurisation up to three atmospheres make it unique in the UK. The facility incorporates extensive engineering systems, including compressors, cooling system, main fan, model handling systems and precision instrumentation, which are controlled by centralised computer based plant control and data acquisition systems.
QinetiQ is looking for dynamic individuals to join the wind tunnel engineering team to support the delivery of wind tunnel testing for the global aircraft industry in its challenging quest to improve aircraft efficiency and to preserve our environment.
What does the Wind Tunnel Engineering team do?
The QinetiQ 5m Wind Tunnel is supported by a dedicated engineering team that is responsible for maintaining, sustaining and developing the whole wind tunnel ecosystem to provide an efficient and effective “Test Service” that delivers high fidelity d ata for our customers. The engineering team ensures the wind tunnel is fully maintained, calibrated and configured for test operations, with any bespoke customer instrumentation integrated into the data acquisition and post-processing systems. Our team draws on a breadth of practical engineering skills with experience ranging from apprenticeships to internationally recognised experts.
The opportunities will suit people looking for a practical, hands-on role as part of the multi-skilled engineering team. You will aspire to develop both a broad knowledge of the whole facility and deep specialised knowledge in specific areas. The wind tunnel operation, combined with the ability to continuously learn and collaborate with others, provides the opportunity for a long, fulfilling and rewarding technical career.
What is the scope of opportunities?
We are looking for:
Senior and Junior Test Engineers, who will liaise with customers and the engineering teams to ensure test requirements and schedules are well understood and planned testing is delivered effectively. Senior Test Engineers will also lead programmes of work, including calibration, data analysis, computing and engineering improvement projects; you may be an experienced Project Engineer with aerospace background. Junior Test Engineers will support all of these tasks, as well as running test processes and writing test reports.
Instrumentation and control engineers, ideally with an electronics background, who will work closely with our Electronics Lead and will be responsible for maintaining, sustaining and developing the control and instrumentation systems. This requires good practical knowledge of data acquisition & plant control systems (SCADA systems), electronics, computer networks, PLCs, as well as understanding the integration of instrumentation, sensors and data systems. A good knowledge of LabVIEW would be a distinct advantage.
Electrical / Plant Technicians, who will have recently completed an Electrical (or closely related) Apprenticeship in an industrial or manufacturing environment; you will be involved in plant maintenance and repair, learning about specific equipment and the processes involved in running and maintaining the electrical systems.
Multi-skilled mechanical technicians and machinists with knowledge of industrial equipment and production plant such as pressure systems, compressors, cooling systems, pumps, valves and motor systems. You will have versatile skills and your broad engineering base will support delivery of heavy engineering and maintenance activities as well as upgrade programmes and production of bespoke parts.
The majority of customer test campaigns require shift working, on a two-shifts per day pattern, for which an additional payment is made on top of basic salary.
