Job description
Technology Operations is part of the BBC’s Chief Operating Group. The department actively helps BBC programme makers create and deliver great content across radio, TV and online. Technology Operations is principally responsible for supporting live and recorded programme output all day, every day across News Group, Radio and BBC North in Salford. As a support department our role is to make life as easy as possible for those using the BBC’s technology, while minimising the amount of licence fee we consume in doing so.
Main Responsibilities
As an Operations Technician based in BBC New Broadcasting House London, you will be part of a team of AV (audio-visual) technicians. You will provide support of audio-visual systems and related IT systems used in production offices, news floors, meeting rooms, high profile public facing areas and apparatus rooms within BBC New Broadcasting House and adjacent buildings. You may also assist in the setup, operation and de-rig of temporary AV systems around the BBC buildings when required as well as providing assistance to engineers.
Management of Health & Safety (H&S) is given highest priority. You will be expected to comply with existing policies as well as contribute to the process of continual improvement of H&S in the workplace. Periodic Electrical (EAW) Safety testing of rack-mounted and portable equipment will be a significant part of the role.
The role integrates immediate operational support with fault diagnosis, resolving issues and equipment testing. There may also be a requirement to make up leads and cables for audio and video installations and, where possible, carrying out basic repairs to equipment. You will be responsible for applying proven techniques and procedures to the solution of incidents and problems. You will be utilising methods prescribed by Technology Operations to log and document your day to day activities as well as recording new methods and findings that may add value to the overall service provided the team.
Are you the right candidate?
As an Operations Technician in a broadcast environment, you will be punctual, reliable, organised and methodical in your approach to fulfilling the role.
You will have experience of working in a broadcast technology or similar environment. You will also have good audio and visual technical skills and/or experience of working with AV equipment, public address and presentation events. You will be familiar with and comfortable in technical environments, keen and quick to learn unfamiliar technologies, operational procedures as well as general Health & Safety procedures and specific practices within the organisation.
Excellent team working skills and the ability to communicate well with a wide range of people at different levels of the organisation is essential for this role. You will have good customer skills and be a good ambassador for Technology Operations. Ability to work on your own initiative to tight deadlines and keeping a calm demeanour in pressure situations is commonly expected in any live broadcasting environment.
