Job description
Do you want to make the world a better place? Are you passionate about protecting our communities against natural threats and hazards?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join the East Midlands Area Leadership Team at the Environment Agency. We are looking for two enthusiastic and inspirational people to lead our Operations Management department:
  • 1 x 18-month assignment (with the potential to become permanent)
  • 1 x 3-month assignment (July – September 2023)

Your work will be conducted in a high-freedom environment that makes the people you work with happier; focuses on health, safety and wellbeing; embraces emergent leadership; and supports your own development.

You'll be a highly visible operational leader, able to organise, inspire and motivate people to achieve great outcomes. You'll know how to make our corporate ambitions and local priorities resonate with others so that plans are converted into delivery on the ground and key stakeholders know the value of our work. You'll bring a passion to the role and in return be supported by great people in the Area.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring flood risk assets are operated to agreed performance standards across an operational Area and leading the Area's incident response to ensure we are prepared, planned, trained and exercised.
  • Ensuring the health, safety and welfare of all the workforce and that safe practice is understood and implemented.
  • Planning and delivering work programmes within allocated budgets to ensure flood risk assets achieve agreed performance and environmental standards using internal and external resources to provide best value.
  • Developing medium-term resource strategies and innovative efficiency plans, for the workforce, to support the delivery of work programmes, effective incident response and manpower planning.
  • You'll also be expected to work closely with area and national colleagues to shape future business.
The team
You will lead and manage a diverse workforce, dispersed across East Midlands who are responsible for delivering our ambition for whole-life Asset Management.
You will also form an essential part of our Area Leadership Team, providing forward thinking and strategic direction to the East Midlands Area. Your leadership will enhance the Areas incident response capability by holding a senior incident management role.
Experience/skills required
We are looking for applicants who believe that providing great leadership is fundamental to our ability to protect people and the environment. You will be able to draw on your experiences as a leader to describe how you have helped make a real difference.

As a member of the Area Leadership Team you will be passionate about developing yourself and those around you, providing a positive role model who is versatile in the way they create an open, inclusive and trusting culture where people can give of their best.

You will know how to make the best use of available resources, aligned with the Environment Agency priorities to deliver outcomes for the benefit of people living and working in East Midlands. You will be able to draw on your experiences as a leader to describe how you have helped make a real difference.
