Job description
Operations Intern at precision agriculture start-up
Outline
This is an exciting opportunity to join a mission-driven, fast-growing startup in Cambridge. Outfield is bringing precision to the global fruit farming industry.
An apple farm can lose up to 20% of its yield every year due to insufficient crop tracking and forecasting - meaning tonnes of apples are left as waste in the orchards. Outfield is reducing this waste, cutting CO2 emissions and helping growers increase their produce by providing them with advanced crop tracking technology.
We use drones combined with machine learning to count fruit, estimate yields, and monitor trees. The Outfield system is providing farmers with powerful insights that help them make decisions, and maximise their efficiency.
Outfield is looking for an intern to work with our Operations Team for 8 weeks from 3rd July 2023 onwards. The role is a mix of field based and office based work, supporting the development, deployment and evaluation of the Outfield farm management platform.
You will work as a full-fledged member of the Operations Team, making a real contribution to Outfield’s development. Where possible, you will be working on and have ownership of specific projects during your internship. As an example these projects might be: testing new drone flight planning systems, generating training datasets to support our machine learning development, or integrating Outfield data into precision farming equipment.
If you want to learn about technology, startups, drones or the future of farming, then this is the position for you. We are looking for someone who is self-motivated, and with a good attention to detail. No prior experience necessary, on-the-job training will be provided.
You will be working regularly at fruit farming locations which are mostly located around Cambridge or in Kent (expenses paid). You should therefore be located near Cambridge, London or Kent during your internship, you must have a UK driving licence, and access to your own vehicle is preferable. When not carrying out field work, you will be working remotely. This is a paid internship position and the salary is £1,800 per month. The position is for 8 weeks with the possibility of extending.
Strictly no recruiters please.
Please note: we are unable to support visa sponsorship for our internship positions and so you must have the right to work in the UK.
