Job description

Position Title: Operational Technician

Position Type: Regular - Full-Time

Position Location: Montrose

Requisition ID: 25152

We are passionate about potatoes. But we’re even more passionate about our People!

For over 60 years we’ve been the number one branded player in the frozen potato market. When it comes to bringing the nation together at mealtimes with simple, delicious, and great tasting food we’re kind of a big deal!

You won’t just find us in supermarkets though. As well as owning a household retail brand, our respected foodservice business works in close partnership with distributors, chefs and caterers across thousands of the country’s pubs, restaurants, hospitals and schools.
We have five McCain factories across the UK, including our head office in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. As well as a strong network of farmers, we also own a seed potato business in Montrose, Scotland. McCain is the UK's largest purchaser of British potatoes, buying approximately 15% of the annual potato crop.

ABOUT THE ROLE.

At our potato business in Montrose, Scotland, we manage and coordinate the annual supply of over 35,000 tonnes of seed potatoes, from over 60 specialist seed potato growers to over 200 ware growers.

On-site at Montrose we have undergone significant investment in an optical grading line, as well as many other upgrades across our storage and grading facility. From our site we handle and grade over 10,000 tonnes of seed potatoes each season, whilst ensuring that quality remains at the heart of everything we do.

We’re looking for someone to join our Montrose team, supporting our Storage and Grading Manager and working collaboratively alongside our Goods in/out Chargehand to ensure the safe and efficient handling and grading of our potatoes.

As we move to using the latest technology to size and sort our potatoes, we are looking for the right person to also take ownership for the running and preventative maintenance of our grading line. We have ambitious plans. And whilst we expect machines will break down occasionally, we believe prevention is better than the cure. We want you at the forefront, knowing how our machines are running and help us come up with new and improved ways to drive reliability, quality, and efficiency.

ABOUT YOU.

Comfortable and confident with technology and machinery, you’ll thrive in a demanding and changing environment and have no hesitation in rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty. We want someone who immerses themselves in the operation, getting right under the skin and always seeking out ways to keep improving & winning.
A confident and clear communicator who enjoys working as part of a small team, but with big ambition.

You will also have:

  • Minimum of 12 months practical experience within a similar role or environment, working with machinery and technology (essential)
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels, within the business and with our growers (essential)
  • Strong computer skills including word, excel and an understanding of windows-based software programmes (essential)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced demanding business (essential)
  • A strong passion for Health & Safety and will share our belief that “nothing we do is worth getting hurt for” (essential)
  • Full UK driving license (essential)
  • IOSH/NEBOSH certificate (desirable)
  • A Forklift Truck license, to provide holiday or sickness cover (desirable)
  • Knowledge of seed potato handling and grading (desirable)

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

You’ll be pleased to know we don’t pay you in ‘chips’. As well as a competitive salary we also have some ‘a-peeling’ benefits including:
Training and development opportunities
Private single medical insurance scheme
A great pension plan — and we’ll pay double what you do, up to a maximum of 12% of your pay
Flexible holidays — with the option to buy & sell up to 5 extra days per year
‘Chips In’ Volunteering Day Off — to make a positive impact in McCain communities across the globe
Optional health cash plan
Cycle to work scheme
And of course, being part of a Global business there are great opportunities to shine/thrive should you wish to relocate in the future. The opportunities are there for those who seek them

WHERE WILL I WORK?

Our Seed Operation is based just outside Montrose, a town situated 38 miles north of Dundee and 42 miles south of Aberdeen, Scotland. Not only does it have the world’s best seed potato operation (our opinion but probably fact!) it’s also lined with award-winning sandy beaches, cosy pubs, and the stunning Montrose Basin Nature Reserve.
