Payworks’ Legal & Privacy team is responsible for the legal, compliance and governance matters at Payworks. Our team is growing and this is an exciting and unique opportunity to join a dynamic technology company! Reporting to the General Counsel & Privacy Officer, the Legal Counsel will provide practical, effective, timely, commercial legal services to Payworks as well as contribute towards the development, implementation and management of Payworks’ legal, compliance and governance programs and procedures. PROVIDE TIMELY SUPPORT & GUIDANCE – IT’S WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Deliver First-Rate Legal Support – Employing your background and experience, you will provide day to day legal advice and support in a range of areas, with a focus on commercial and workplace matters, including the following:
- Drafting, reviewing and advising on various workplace matters and agreements including employment, real property, intellectual property and privacy matters and agreements;
- Maintaining database of existing contracts;
- Improving existing commercial and workplace templates and processes;
- Update & Inform – You will support the continual review of legal, compliance & governance policies, processes, procedures, and materials to ensure we stay on the leading edge. Leveraging your excellent communication skills, you will provide legal guidance by liaising with key internal and external stakeholders as required on legal, compliance and governance matters - this includes educating and providing support through delivering related training presentations and continuous interactions
- Champion High-Quality Compliance – You will track regulatory requirements related to our business; monitor current and emerging industry legal, compliance and governance best practices and trends; perform compliance impact assessments and inquires; and assist with developing risk mitigation strategies.
- Make an Impact – You will also have the opportunity to complete special and strategic projects that matter to our business and other duties as assigned by the General Counsel & Privacy Officer.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited Canadian university.
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba.
- Strong academic background.
- 1 – 3 years’ experience as a practicing lawyer in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Broad legal experience and knowledge in the areas of commercial, workplace and technology law.
- Ability to provide legal advice on complex, time-sensitive issues.
- Ability to understand, interpret, explain and provide legal advice on key legislation and regulations.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to recognize, investigate and assess legal implications, to identify related business ramifications and develop innovative solutions.
- Excellent organization, time management and project management skills.
- Superior written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to handle a high volume of work in a competing priority environment.
- Enthusiastic desire to develop a broad legal skillset and contribute to different areas across the business.
- Commitment to continuous learning.
- Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and constructively in a team environment.
- Ability to build strong relationships, support, and collaborate with all stakeholders at Payworks.
- A high degree of professionalism, business judgment and personal ethics, integrity, and responsibility.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
BONUS SKILL SET
- Experience with and knowledge of technology sector and technology law an asset.
- Knowledge of payroll and/or financial law and industry an asset.
- Written and oral fluency in both official languages (French/English) an asset.
