Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player to join our Inpatient Band 6 OT rotation at NUH. This role is permanent but internal/external secondment opportunities would also be supported alongside full-time/part-time hours.

This is a new role rotating across established and supportive teams who would welcome a new team member bringing a different background of experience to their teams.

The rotation is set across QMC and City Campus of NUH and includes

  • Critical Care
  • Neurosciences
  • Trauma, Orthopaedics and Spines
  • Major Trauma
  • Medicine and Surgery

Prior experience of these settings is not required and support/training will be offered including regular joint working, participation in team and peer teaching, access to external teaching, regular supervision and CPD time.

You will work alongside staff of all bands including Band 7 Advanced Practitioners with the opportunity and support to enhance and develop skills in the following areas;

  • Assessment/rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury
  • Assessment/management of conditions across the MSK, vascular, spinal, surgical and acute medicine pathways including poly-trauma, amputation and spinal cord injury.
  • Supervising others in the team including support workers and band 5s

This rotation is ideal for someone who is looking to move from Band 5 to 6 and wanting to develop their clinical and leadership skills further, or a current Band 6 that is looking to broaden their clinical skill set.

NUH is a large acute teaching hospital and this post will allow you to work in many specialist areas with a huge variety of patients. Staff will be responsible for a diverse and complex clinical case load. You will be expected to work collaboratively across the MDT with a wide range of Health Care Professionals.

You will have excellent communication and team working skills. You will have a flexible approach and the ability to manage your own time and workload in what is a fast paced working environment. You will be involved in managing and supporting Band 5s, support staff and students on clinical placement allowing development of your leadership, managerial and teaching skills. You may also deputise for Band 7s on occasion.

You will be required to work on weekend and Bank Holiday rotas.

The Occupational Therapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core OT skills and a willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally. You will be working as part of multidisciplinary teams who will give support and training for you to develop in this role to reach your full potential. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to less experienced members of the team, including students and support workers. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

    • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
    • HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist
    • Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities

Experience

Essential criteria

    • Experience of working within an acute inpatient setting
    • Experience of using evidenced based practice to inform own practice and that of others

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria

    • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
    • Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.
    • Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness

Analytical and judgement skills

Essential criteria

    • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff
    • Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex wheelchair patients
    • Independently work through the OT process with patients requiring a permanent wheelchair

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria

    • Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity
    • Able to make judgements about the prioritising of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process

Physical skills

Essential criteria

    • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes safe wheelchair positioning, maximising patient ability

    • Flexibility to work elsewhere in Therapies or as required across both campuses
    • Flexible working schedules including participation in weekend rosters where required
