Job description

You will bring the drive to develop yourself, your colleagues and your service in this post. Newly qualified Therapists will also benefit from undertaking the Trusts’ Preceptorship Training Programme which covers skills across both Nursing and AHP’s.

This 12 month Preceptorship Programme is an innovative programme, led by a multi-professional team of educators with a proven ability to be able to coach and mentor. Utilising your Preceptorship portfolio and by attending the programme, you can enhance your clinical expertise, master complex concepts, sharpen your critical thinking ability, promote career advancements and develop your leadership potential. In addition, your programme will provide you with further skills including quality improvement, resilience and mindfulness.

There will be a requirement to work across a 7 day service within the rotations, across various sites.

To assess and treat patients referred to the team, with both direct/indirect supervision and guidance from Senior Therapists.

To participate in the Staff rotational scheme which involves, in a range of Ward settings and Outpatient departments. New rotations have been added which include vascular surgery ward and critical care on the Aintree site.

To assist Senior staff in the organisation of work within a clinical area and supervising Occupational Therapy Assistants, Work Experience Students and Healthcare Cadets.

To undertake Occupational Therapy assessment, clinically diagnose, implement treatment plans and evaluate care delivery according to health care needs for routine patients.

To undertake Occupational Therapy assessment, clinically diagnose, implement treatment plans and evaluate care delivery according to health care needs for complex patients with the support of the Senior Therapists within the team.

To participate in Clinical Specialist led clinics as required per rotation.

To participate in Occupational Therapy rotations as part of the Staff grade rotation programme.

To liaise regularly with senior colleagues regarding management of caseload, treatment progression and on-going care.

To take part in acute intervention weekend working (optional).

To participate in multi-disciplinary working and take an active part in MDT meetings.

To participate in teaching and advice giving sessions with patients, carers and other Health Care Professionals to ensure best provision of patient care.

To ensure effective communication with patients, carers and all Health Care Professionals
about all aspects of patient care. This will include patients who will have difficulties in understanding and communication.

To carry out home assessments within the patients usual place of residence. Liaising with family, carers, multidisciplinary team and support teams within the community.

To make recommendations based on Occupational Therapy clinical reasoning, problem solving and risk assessment in order to maintain the patients functional abilities and quality of life within the community.

To liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies regarding social Care and housing, to provide equipment, recommend and arrange home adaptations to support independent living skills. To complete necessary documentation required by statutory and voluntary agencies.

To plan, manage and evaluate aspects of own work as agreed with Senior staff and Managers.

To maintain accurate and timely records of patients treated by self, in order that relevant workload information is available to Therapy Managers at all times.

To identify changes in own workload, which may affect the running of the service, and inform Senior Therapist prior to any action taken.

  • The post holder shall as necessary provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues.
  • The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation.
To comply with the Health & Safety Policies of the Trust including attendance at mandatory training sessions as specified by the Trust.

To comply with departmental and organisational policies and procedures.

Ensure all accidents, incidents and hazards are reported and dealt with according to Trust requirements.

To comply with the College of Occupational Therapy standards and rules of professional conduct.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust and Departmental Standards of Practice.

To ensure treatments offered to patients are based on best available clinical evidence.

To comply with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott recommendations.

To participate in Clinical Audit as appropriate in each speciality area under the supervision of a Senior Therapist.

To gain valid informed consent in line with Trust and departmental policy.

To identify clinical risk within own patient case-load and liaise with Senior Therapist for appropriate support.

To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.

Assist with the induction and training of new staff and students assigned to the team.

To actively participate in the In-Service training programmes.

To attend relevant training courses as identified and agreed with Senior staff and Managers during staff appraisal sessions.

To disseminate information from training sessions as required.

To undertake regular training and mentoring sessions with Senior staff to monitor and develop clinical and professional skills.
