Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Occupational Health Screening & Wellbeing Nurse for Northamptonshire Police. This is a hybrid role and will be based at the Northampton Occupational Health in Northampton.

You will be working Monday to Friday 37 hours a week.9am to 5pm

PLEASE NOTE DUE TO POLICE VETTING CRITERIA YOU MUST HAVE RESIDED CONTINUOUSLY WITHIN THE UK FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS.

JOB PURPOSE:- To deliver a safe, effective, and efficient occupational health service to the Northamptonshire Police Force as part of the occupational health team.

Core Responsibilities/ Accountabilities
  • To set up for a clinic, be able to undertake validate/calibrate and maintain the equipment following any cleaning regimes.
  • To order and maintain the stock levels of clinical supplies/consumables.
  • To undertake the biometric screening for pre-placement health assessments required for specific roles.
  • To undertake health surveillance tests including spirometry and audiometry as required.
  • Undertake regular fitness for task medical assessments/health checks of all employees including overseeing a range of clinical procedures within the remit of Occupational Health Services.
  • To safely store and administer vaccines that are required for operational purposes.
  • Deliver immunisations with support of a senior nurse but without the need for direct supervision - working as an autonomous practitioner and making clinical judgments and decisions following advice of senior colleagues.
  • Safe effective administration of immunisations in line with local and national policy/guidance and PGDs.
  • Obtain venous blood samples.
  • Offer appropriate management/advice following needle stick/human bite injuries.
  • To deliver health and wellbeing assessments.in association with the Force wellbeing team, based on regional/force research and data to support the requirements of the public health agenda proactively assisting individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • To make and retain confidential and accurate records as appropriate.
  • To have an understanding of organisational risk and the steps to mitigate for these.
  • To use professional and clinical judgement to make appropriate decisions and give recommendations in all areas of the role.
  • To undertake such other duties commensurate with the post as may be required for the safe and effective performance of the job.
  • To assist in formulation of occupational health related policies, procedures, and guidance.
  • Give advice and guidance on occupational health matters to members of the Force to facilitate effective management of staff and the provision of a healthy working environment balancing clinical/ethical requirements against those of the organisation.
  • Contribute to effective communication mechanisms within the OH team, particularly those necessary to achieve consistency of practice, changes to practice and team well-being.
  • Act as a representative for the Occupational Health service at meetings and seminars when required
  • Ensure that confidentiality of employee records is maintained.
  • To assist fellow clinicians within the OHU as required and directed.
  • To undertake such other duties commensurate with the post as may be required for the safe and effective performance of the role.
  • Be flexible in terms of working location and be prepared to work at other locations within the Force.

Essential Criteria

Knowledge/ Education

Be a Registered Nurse with relevant experience in a health screening setting, an Occupational Health qualification is not required. An interest in or experience of at least one of the following: health promotion, practice nursing, occupational health, health visiting, district/community nursing or other qualification/experience relevant to the remit of this role
  • Demonstrate recent clinical experience in practice including health surveillance, screening with knowledge and/or experience in vaccination and blood borne virus protection programmes.
  • Proven experience in delivering public-facing work, health and wellbeing promotion activities.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to communicate confidently and effectively at all levels, whilst maintaining good working relationships with a diverse range of people.
  • Able to independently make and justify routine decisions using initiative and judgement through the analysis of medical/ testing information as well as problem solve, implement, and review appropriate solutions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work to strict deadlines in a pressurised environment prioritising workload.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively & provide support within a team evidencing a flexible approach.
  • Demonstrate personal awareness of diversity issues and encourage an inclusive environment of equal opportunity and openness.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to travel for business purposes *
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), Data Protection Act and all legislation in relation to medical confidentiality including storage, access and transfer of medical records and medical consent.
