The Room Leader will be a Level 3 qualified childcare professional and will carry out a key role within the organisation. The Room Leader is responsible for providing safe, high quality education and care for the children aged between 25 and 36 months. They will be creative and reflective leaders, able to implement new ideas and use a range of strategies to continually improve practice. Room leaders are expected to lead and manage room staff on a day-to-day basis and to implement the Nursery’s ethos, policies, and procedures.

An enhanced DBS check is required by Little Feet before any appointment can be confirmed.

Detailed Responsibilities and Duties

1. Academic and Pastoral Care

The Room Leader is expected to lead their room and staff team to deliver a vibrant learning environment, ensuring that children are stimulated by an exciting range of experiences. They will:

a) Under the direction of the Director/Manager, take responsibility for planning and carrying out the curriculum, which take into account the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage for the children in your care.

b) Ensure that room staff, volunteers (e.g., students) and resources are effectively managed, whilst driving improvements in your staff team, supporting staff to achieve targets etc.

c) Be responsible for providing a high quality of teaching and learning, ensuring that staff are properly deployed and offering appropriate stimulation and support to all children.

d) To lead on observations with all staff in your room and provide accurate and supportive feedback.

e) Manage the key person system and be responsible for implementing systems of observation, record keeping, and report writing so that children’s progress and achievements are effectively and regularly assessed.

f) Act as a key person to children within your room, liaising closely with parents/carers and ensuring each child’s needs are recognised and met.

g) Ensure records are properly maintained, e.g., daily registers, accident and injury records, medication records, daily safety checks, opening and closing procedures.

h) Observe and record children’s progress ensuring progress measures are met by the team in the room, reports produced for Management are accurate and timelines are met. Tapestry shows accurate progress for all children and is monitored regularly.

i) Ensure that the team under your direction also produce accurate, well written and information learning journeys within agreed timescales.

j) Liaise closely with parent/carers, exchanging information about children’s progress and encouraging parents’ interest and involvement. Arrange parent evenings, outings, events throughout the year in a proactive and coordinated manner.

k) Liaise with the SENDCo and other professionals, as necessary and complete forms to support areas of delayed development (e.g. using the ECAT tool).

l) Advise the DSL of any concerns over a child.

m) Ensure the room and adjoining areas is a safe environment for children, staff, and others, that equipment is checked regularly for safety, standards of hygiene are high, and health and safety procedures and measures are implemented at all times.

2. Professional Standards

Reporting to the Director/Manager, the Room Leader will:

a) Attend staff meeting and in-service training courses as required.

b) To assist in the development and support of other staff members by communicating effectively, sharing knowledge and experience, delegating tasks appropriately, identifying training needs, leading meetings, inductions, 1-2-1 with support from management.

c) Ensure the whole team works flexibly and takes shared responsibility so that adult: child ratios are always maintained through rota support and management.

d) Keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families, or other staff information that should not be shared with the team.

e) To cooperate and work effectively with the management and room leader team, taking on additional responsibilities/duties and positively promoting developments in policies and procedures to team members.

f) Keep up to date with current good practice and Ofsted themes.

g) Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by Director/Manager.
