Main purpose:
To provide continuity of care for the groups of children within the Day Nursery ensuring that each child is provided with a safe, secure, emotionally and physically stimulating environment and programme of activities in which to develop.

General duties:
Children-
1. To be fully responsible for the children in your care, providing a
consistently safe, secure and stimulating environment.
2. To provide a wide range of enjoyable, stimulating and educational
activities for a group of children, covering all aspects of the child's
individual development in accordance with the Early Years
Foundation Stage (EYFS).
3. To be a key-person (if allocated a group by the Nursery Manager) building a strong attachment and knowing your key children well as individuals.
4. To maintain required records of children’s development, learning and activities. This includes completion of; message sheets, ECAT, starting point summaries, termly reviews, Tapestry observations, planning records and any other records requested.
5. To work alongside the nursery SENDco to support children with additional needs ensuring that their development is promoted as fully as possible.
6. To follow the Department Safeguarding policy ensuring that concerns are raised appropriately.
7. To ensure that statutory child: adult ratio is met at all times notifying a member of the Leadership and Management team if ratio cannot be met.
8. To ensure that accidents and/ or problems with individual children, staff or parents/ carers are brought to the Duty Manager’s attention.
9. To plan age appropriate, engaging activities for the children showing the intent, impact and implementation as well as evaluating the effectiveness.
Your role
1. To hold a full and relevant Level 3 Early Years Qualification (in accordance with https://www.gov.uk/guidance/early-years-qualifications- finder ). If qualified post June 2016, to also hold a full paediatric first aid (PFA) or an emergency PFA certificate
2. To hold a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check notifying the Leadership and Management team if you have any involvement with the police.
3. Attend regular training sessions, which may be out of working hours, and implement learning from training within your practice.
4. Attend and contribute to regular staff meetings, which may be out of working hours.
5. Assist in activities outside of working hours (e.g. fund raising events, open evenings).
6. Adhere to the Department Policies and Procedures, and be prepared to answer questions/ explain these to parents or visitors (including Ofsted).
7. Respect the principle of confidentiality of information gained through your work, including when using social media outside of work.
8. Promoting a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene standards through: monitoring and supervising of nappy changing/ toilet and washing procedure, regular cleaning of toys and equipment, the cleaning of children’s crockery and bedding.
9. Assist in the preparation and serving of food and supervision of meal times.To exercise a duty of care for work colleagues and to be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for all children, staff and visitors. Minimise hazards and report any faulty equipment or hazards within the working environment.
Working with others
1. To work as part of a team with other staff members, to ensure the children receive the highest possible standard of childcare
2. Communicate and liaise appropriately with all parents, visitors and colleagues.
3. Welcoming all children and parents to the nursery and helping them settle (irrespective of their rooms)
4. Work in partnership with parents, consulting and sharing information with them about their child.
5. To take a lead with specific aspects of development work of the nursery as requested by the Leadership and Management team
6. To take a lead within the room if the Senior Nursery Nurse is not present ensuring that each child’s needs are met, and routines are followed as appropriate by all staff.
7. To mentor students/ new staff helping them to learn about all aspects of the Nursery Assistant/ Nurse role, including completing relevant paperwork during student placements.
8. To routinely work as a positive role model in all practice for colleagues and students.
Quality
9. To strive to meet the individual needs of each child and family throughout nursery routines and practice.
10. To ensure the Setting is a high quality environment to meet the needs of all children including those from differing cultures and religious backgrounds (British Values & Cultural capital),
11. To routinely implement the principles of Shared Sustained Thinking and Characteristics of Effective Learning to a high standard.
12. To routinely use the principles of Emotion Coaching throughout daily practice and when trying to understand/ manage a child’s behaviour to a high standard.
13. To routinely show good practice as measured by staff observations.
14. To promote language development for all children including those with English as an Additional Language or language delay. This includes completing Every Child A Talker (ECAT) forms (if a key- person) and routinely using running commentary and signing throughout the nursery day.
15. To have an enthusiastic approach to improve and impact outcomes and practice for children, their families and the nursery team.
16. Maintain a clean and tidy nursery and garden area and ensure books, toys and equipment are clean and in good order.
17. To have knowledge of the overall effectiveness principles of an Ofsted Early Years Inspection (EIF) across all four judgements- Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development and Leadership and management

NHS standards of business conduct and professional registration

All clinical professionally regulated staff must abide by the codes of conduct issued by their respective regulatory bodies (e.g. NMC, GMC, HPC) and ensure that they maintain updated registration as required by the role.

Mental Capacity Act 2005
All Staff are required to ensure knowledge regarding the Mental Capacity Act 2005
(MCA) at a level deemed essential for their role. The level of training required will be specified to members of staff and is dependent on their role. It is important that staff understand and comply with local policies and procedures relating to MCA to ensure the Trust can act in an individual’s best interest when providing care. This helps to ensure ongoing adherence to our legal obligations and ensuring we put the needs of our patients first.
Sustainability
Staff are reminded of their responsibility to take care of the resources used whilst at work. These include careful use of energy and water; for example, ensuring unnecessary equipment is turned off when not in use. Waste needs to be segregated properly. UHS policies and strategies for sustainability should be followed whilst undertaking daily duties. We encourage staff to be involved with sustainability at work, through participation in the Green Guardians network.
