Nursery Cook
Purpose of the Role
To prepare and cook healthy, nutritious, well-balanced meals for all the children within the Nursery following the Eat Better, Start Better guidelines.
Working in partnership with the Manager and Deputy adhering to the Policies and Procedures as set in the company manual and in compliance with COSHH regulations, Health and Safety and within the guidelines as set by OFSTED.
Experience of working in a childcare setting is desirable but not essential.
Qualifications
· Food Safety Certificate is essential

Operational Responsibilities
- Be a reliable member of a team, working co-operatively and with flexibility.
- To maintain a high standard of work following the daily menus, as issued to you by your Manager.
· To cater for the individual dietary requirements of every child within nursery, including cultural beliefs and allergies. This includes making similar alternative meals for children, such as, dairy/egg free cakes or puddings.
· To plan and organise seasonal menus – researching recipes to ensure that a varied, nutritious diet is offered and maintained.
· To organise the control and ordering of stock and equipment as required.
· Accepting and putting away deliveries alongside the Nursery Cook
· To carry out an annual review and costing of catering suppliers to ensure that the Nursery is obtaining best value for money.
· To maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen to meet all environmental health requirements and to jointly maintain the 5 star Food Hygiene Rating.
· To keep daily records of fridge and freezer temperatures plus records of incoming stock temperatures and to ensure rotation of stock and safe storage of goods.
· To implement a HACCAP policy as advised by Lancashire Council environmental health officers, currently the Food Standards Agency (FSA) “Safer food, Better business” in conjunction with the other cook.
· To comply, keep up to date and inform others of all requirements and recommendations of the FSA, together with the other cook.
· To be responsible for checking food ingredients with regards to allergies and liaise with the nursery manager and Deputy in compiling up to date allergy records and to jointly ensure the Allergy and Recipe file is kept up to date and complies with legislation.
· Ensure that cost of food is actively monitored, and nursery catering is delivered within budget.
· To maintain equipment and organise routine servicing, to forecast, where possible, when equipment might need replacement.
· To cooperatively source equipment, both small and capital, when required to ensure best value is achieved.
· To ensure that Suppliers deliver the quality required at best price, visiting and liaising with them to inspect premises and HACCP policies.
· To manage the nurseries Cool Milk account, – ordering, completing paperwork and maintaining records.
· To develop and adhere to policies and procedures developed by the nursery, with regards to policies relating to food management, allergies and health and hygiene.
· To work with staff to meet individual needs of all children.
· To work with families and Staff in Caterpillars with regards to weaning of babies.
Human Resources Responsibilities
- Participate in all self-development activities, including appraisals etc.
- Show a willingness to participate in further training to enhance job capability and improve
- Develop positive relationships with other staff working within the Nursery.
- To maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Project a friendly approach to customers at all times.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- To be aware of the company Health and Safety Policy.
- To comply with the company’s regulation manuals.
- Undertake a shared responsibility for Health and Safety and cleanliness.
- Be familiar with all emergency and security procedures, e.g. Fire Procedures.
- Adhere to the company Policies and Procedures including attendance at meetings when required, preparation of reports and any other duties as required.

· The post holder may be required to perform duties other than those given in the job description for the post. Such variations are a common occurrence and would not in themselves justify the revaluation of the post.
Hours of work: Monday – Friday 40 hours per week as agreed with the Senior Nursery Manager.
