Job description
This is a new role, and a rare and exciting opportunity to join our small, friendly community Tuberculosis (TB) team. We are looking for a Band 4 nurse to join our dedicated team for a fixed period of 6 months for 22.5 hours a week. We are based in both Norwich and Long Stratton Health Centre. We work mainly in Norwich, but also cover South Norfolk and North Norfolk areas and occasional visits are required in these areas.
You will have the opportunity to enhance your clinical skills and knowledge of TB. Including supporting the team to review patients who have a diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB) or are undergoing investigations for TB in their own residence and in clinics. Once trained and with support, you will be partly responsible for monitoring a small caseload of patients, screening contacts at home or in clinic, new entrant screening clinic and BCG vaccination clinic.
This is a secondment/fixed term contract until March 2024.
The role will include independent working but due to the unique nature of the specialty, we do not expect applicants to have any prior knowledge or experience of working with TB, as all necessary support and training will be provided once the successful applicant is in post.
The role is varied and can changes from day to day. The role offers the opportunity to work in clinics and from office/home, in the community, seeing people at home, telephone reviews and working closely with our colleagues at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital by attending clinics and visiting wards to review patients.
We work with a variety of outside agencies including UK Health Security Agency, Public Health, Infection Control Team, People from Abroad team, Looked after children team and Intrans (translation service).
You will need effective communication skills and must be prepared to work flexibly and collaboratively to meet the needs of the service. It is essential to be able to apply your knowledge and skills to clinical practice.

Key Areas of Responsibility
- To contribute to the assessment, care and treatment for patients on treatment for active Tuberculosis (TB), or latent TB.
- To work within the team to facilitate safe discharge from hospital
- To work within the team to monitor side effects of treatment and prevent unnecessary admission to hospital.
- To work with all health care professionals, and statutory/non statutory agencies to provide a seamless, integrated service to our service users.
- Assess patients with straightforward requirements based on predetermined department protocols.
- Apply competency-based treatment techniques/care to patients with specific conditions under the supervision of a qualified practitioner, following a prescribed treatment/care plan.
- Modify intervention/treatment as appropriate, notifying a qualified practitioner accordingly in line with own competence.
- Progress intervention using own clinical reasoning supported by the supervision process.
- Monitor patients and promptly alert a qualified practitioner when there are unexpected changes.
- Demonstrate problem solving, and contribute to the solution, working with colleagues.
- Liaise with GPs, Social Services, inpatient teams, other allied health care professionals and the voluntary sector to ensure identified needs are met and care co-ordinated appropriately.
- To participate in multi-disciplinary/multi-agency meetings as appropriate
- Be responsible for ensuring equipment is used safely, following appropriate training, and that it is maintained appropriately.
- Work predominantly independently on specified tasks, with regular clinical support and supervision by a qualified practitioner.
- Share responsibility for indirect patient contact tasks where appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings and other meetings where appropriate.
- To maintain own clinical and professional development (CPD) by keeping up-to-date with changes / developments and research in practice to enhance clinical reasoning skills.

- Undertake regular team, individual and profession-specific clinical / managerial supervision as supervisee.
- Assisting with development of this new service where appropriate and where required.
- To maintain accurate, unified multidisciplinary clinical records in accordance with team standards, professional and Trust guidelines.
- To adhere to trust guidance on mobile working in the community.
- Undertake mandatory training as required.
- To participate in an annual Performance Review as an appraisee.
- To conform to all Trust policies and guidelines relating to areas such as: discrimination, health and safety, moving and handling, basic life support, fire safety and risk management.
- Ensure absence reporting is undertaken as determined by Team Leader and Trust Policy.
- Contribute to clinical audit as required.
- Complete the staff survey as required.
- Complete risk assessments and incident forms as required
