Range of Pay: Group 15 - $38.13 to $46.83 per hour

The start date will follow the selection process.

This position is eligible to work remotely on a part-time basis.

Characteristic Duties: Under the general supervision of the Manager of Design Services.

1. Lead, monitor, delegate, assign tasks and co-ordinate the work of Section staff. Ensure on-schedule delivery of work performed by Section staff.
2. Prepare preliminary and detailed design of roadways, storm and sanitary sewer collection systems and water distribution systems, including the preparation of detailed drawings, cost estimates and contract specifications and documents.
3. Assist in the preparation of pre-engineering requirements for engineering surveys, drafting requirements, legal surveys, easement applications, property requirements, utility relocations and sewer condition assessments.
4. Review and report on proposed sub-division and re-zonings applications, Municipal Consent and Committee of Adjustment applications, building permit applications and site plan agreements, as required.
5. Provide mentoring, technical guidance and assistance in the instruction and training of Section staff.
6. Process permits and applications in accordance with established policy.
7. Work with and form part of project teams that ensure construction is carried out in accordance with design and specifications.
8. Liaise with consulting engineers, contractors and developers regarding city standards and specifications required for approval of drawings under review.
9. Review and approve invoices related to a specific area of responsibility.
10. Participate in the preparation of project plans, design schedules and capital budget estimates.
11. Co-ordinate and attend project meetings and prepare meeting notes as required.
12. Keep abreast of new engineering and GIS technologies and evaluate them for implementation; promote and foster continuous improvement.
13. Investigate complaints and enquiries; provide prompt, courteous and responsive customer service.
14. Monitor decisions and actions of other departments and agencies related to project design work provided by the Section as directed.
15. Prepare design of projects required by Growth and Infrastructure and other departments, including contract documents for construction projects.
16. Assist in the preparation of forecasts of capital construction programs and update them, as required.
17. Assist in the development of City standards and specifications.
18. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS’s Safety manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
19. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a Community College Diploma with Canadian accreditation in a related field (e.g. Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, etc.).
  • Certification or eligible for certification as a Technologist by the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
  • Over five (5) years up to and including seven (7) years of experience in the design and construction of roads, drainage, sewer and municipal water facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of Engineering design and construction practices including related equipment use.
  • Demonstrate and proven ability related to microcomputer software and administrative systems (i.e. engineering software, spreadsheet and database applications).
  • Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in dealing with staff, consultants, outside agencies, other departments, councillors and the general public in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and related regulations.
  • Demonstrate organizational, administrative and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
  • French verbal and written skills an asset.
  • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.
  • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver’s licence, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage.
