Job description

Have you ever thought you could be a Detective Constable?

With a starting salary of £26,682 plus a large variety of benefits, staff associations and generous pension scheme, there may never have been a better time to join. Interested? apply below!

If you question everything, never accepting things the way they are this could be the role for you.

As a police detective in Cleveland, you’re the most critical support for victims of crime. We are looking for talented individuals to step up to protect society’s most vulnerable.

As a detective you’ll deal with serious and complex investigations, uncovering the truth and analysing evidence on cases. This could range from undertaking search warrants and making arrests to pursuing a case through the courts. At times it can be a challenging role, but also incredibly rewarding. You’ll strive to achieve the right outcome for victims and their families. Routes into policing as a Detective Constable are:

Degree Holder Programme (DHEP)

The DHEP route is right for you if you already have an undergraduate degree in any subject, you’ll join and follow a work-based programme, supported by off-the-job learning. This route normally takes two years, and the learning you have undergone is recognised in a graduate diploma in professional policing practice when you complete your probation.

IPLDP Plus

This route is ideal for you if you don’t meet the criteria for the DHEP. However, you’ll need one Level 3 Qualification in any subject or relevant quantifiable experience for the role of Detective Constable. This is a two-year programme.

Participants on either route are required to pass the National Investigators’ Exam (NIE) and achieve full Professionalising Investigation Programme Stage 2 (PIP2) accreditation by programme completion.

Am I eligible?

The people of Cleveland deserve an excellent service, so we are looking for the best people to join us and demonstrate our values. But there’s some formal stuff you’ll need to have too, and it’s really important to make sure you meet the eligibility criteria for which ever route you apply for.

You must also:

  • be 17 years of age or older (you must be 18 by the time you are appointed)
  • be a British citizen, a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Economic Area or Switzerland, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national who is resident in the UK and free from restrictions
  • have a full manual driving license, with 6 months driving experience when appointed
  • be able pass the vetting requirements
  • have been resident in the UK for the past three years (for vetting purposes)
  • not have tattoos on your hands, neck, forearms or face that could be offensive
  • not be registered bankrupt (or have bankruptcy debts that have been discharged within the past three years). If you have any other outstanding and unmanageable debts, please contact us for more information
  • be able to pass a job-related fitness test
  • be able to pass a medical assessment

For more information on joining Cleveland Police please read the attached guidance document. For frequently asked question please click here.

Should you not meet the requirements above we will be required to decline your application.

We are only running a small number of cohorts for each route so should you be interested in a specific programme then please be aware any pre-agreed time off during your initial training will not be agreed and it won’t be possible to defer.

Closing date for applications is 30th June 2023. Please do not apply if you already have an application in with Cleveland Police as Detective Constable.

We anticipate a high number of applications to be a Detective Constable which may result in a competitive process for places on the cohort.

Please do not apply if you have been a regret at any point during the recruitment process within the last 3 months. If you have failed vetting previously you will need to wait 12 months before reapplying from the date the unsuccessful vetting was issued. This role is not suitable for serving Police Constables.

Cleveland Police is committed to improving the diversity of its workforce to better reflect the communities we serve. We welcome applications from all minority groups and individuals who identify with one or more of the protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010. All appointments will be made on merit.
