Job description
As a Water Network Technician you'll support the day to day operation and maintenance of Clean Water Network and assets to ensure United Utilities (UU) Wholesale delivers its operational objectives. You'll be accountable for the inspection of water network assets including Service Reservoirs, Pumping Stations, air valves, pipe bridges, trunk mains and pressure vessels.
Job Accountabilities
You'll be responsible for identifying asset optimisation and improvement opportunities within a predefined geographical area and managing asset status and verification. You'll also be responsible for:
- Undertaking boundary valve checks in line with UU maintenance strategy
- General up keep and maintenance of the assets
- Ensuring contractor sign-off for work undertaken by 3rd parties on assets under the role holder's accountability
- Undertaking Network risk assessments and water network rezones
- Providing incident and event support as required
- Undertaking local network investigations and improvements
- Setting up DMA/District Pressure Areas (DPA) to ensure operability
- Undertaking confined space entry and assessments
- Ensuring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and vehicles comply with UU Health & Safety (H&S) policy
- Drop testing service reservoirs and refilling service reservoirs
- Flushing main for commissioning and maintenance purposes
- Identifying strategic valve
- Installing/removing loggers
- Inspection of non-domestic pipe-outs (excluding domestic and new fire supply)
- Illegal connections investigation
- Mains supply – interruption/restoration
- Investigating pressure & flow on the water network
- Locating apparatus on the water network
- Complying with all H&S procedures
- Maintenance – H&S Audits, site access, site security
- Operating, optimising and rotating pumps
- Operating and maintaining standby generators
- Supporting statutory pressure vessel testing
- Undertaking Network Risk Assessments
- Lifting equipment coordination, inspection and testing
- Setting up operate and remove standpipe
- Updating mobile devices
- Project work – site handovers, access certificates, Permit to Works
- Setting up site as per New Roads and Streetworks Act (NRSWA)
Knowledge and Skills
To be successful in this role you'll have GCSE grade C or above, City and Guilds, or ability to demonstrate technical and customer skills. You'll also need:
- Demonstrable water network technical experience, including leakage detection and repair
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective influencing and negotiation skills
- Strong customer service focus and be able to resolve customer issues
- Ability to work alone as well as effectively as part of a team
- A good level of competency in the use of relevant IT packages
- Previous experience of working in an operational environment
- Previous experience of working within water networks
