You’ll join the team that sets the timings of London's 6000 traffic lights and it’s a great opportunity to work in this friendly and welcoming team.
It's a great time to start your new career in road network management. The essential technical and clerical support that you’ll be providing in this role will be helping TfL meet the challenge of finding the right balance for all road users.
Responding to customer enquires is a core aspect of the role, so you’ll have a can-do approach to helping Londoners understand how traffic signals work in their area.
Every day is different in our team, so you’ll need an adaptive approach. You will have opportunities to get out and about around London’s Road network and sometimes work flexible hours as work requirements change.

Key Accountabilities
Your duties will include, but not be limited to:
- Assist in the response to enquiries from the public and other stakeholders by assessing the service being provided and liaising with Principal Network Managers and Network Managers
- Respond to requests for data from external agencies by providing the appropriate data and supporting information in a timely manner
- Assist in design and implementation of London’s traffic control system, SCOOT, Bus Priority and local control strategies
- Carry out traffic modelling for simple networks under the supervision of Principal Network Managers
- Review and implement revised traffic signal timings following traffic modelling in order to ensure the efficient operation of the road network
- Provide support for events on the network when required.
- Responsible for understanding and acting on the Surface Safety vision of 'Everyone home safe and healthy every day'
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
- Proficient MS Office skills, including experience in designing and manipulating spreadsheets (Essential)
- Good oral and written communication skills (Essential)
- An adaptable and flexible approach to work, capable of adjusting priorities to respond to daily challenges and opportunities (Essential)
- Able to manage own time and work to tight timescales (Essential)
- Excellent numeracy with the ability to analyse engineering data with an attention to detail (Highly desirable)
- Willingness to work outside normal office hours including occasional weekend and night work (Highly desirable)
Knowledge
- GCSEs, grade B or above, or equivalent qualification or experience in Maths and English Language (Essential)
- Interest in traffic light technology (Essential)
- Awareness of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and Healthy Streets approach (Desirable)
- An understanding of Transport issues in the Public Sector Domain (Desirable)
Experience
- Experience of maintaining accurate records and filing systems (Highly desirable)
- Experience of a data lead approach to resolving problems (Highly desirable)
- Work experience in an analytical and / or problem solving capacity (Desirable)
- Experience of working under pressure and to deadlines (Desirable)
