Job summary

The Mechanical Transport Flight at Royal Air Force Leeming is looking to recruit an organised, efficient, and hard-working individual into the vacant Transport Driver position. This role helps form a key part of the support services offered to RAF Leeming Station and wider MoD, by the Logistics Squadron. You will be a member of the Mechanical Transport Team, working together with RAF Service personnel and other Civil Servants.

On a daily full-time basis, you will work as part of a shift team. Ensuring all daily tasks are delivered to their destination on time, professionally to a high standard. A varied role will see the right candidate be responsible for personnel and equipment, transiting across the UK as part of the MOD needs. Professionally, the candidate will need to think quickly on their feet when presented with logistical problems, learn how to liaise with different departments appropriately and build a strong working relationship in logistics.

This role is offered at 37 hours a week. Additional hours will encompass shift working.

Job description

The successful applicant will work closely withing the Mechanical Transport Flight as a shift driver, in a mixed Military and Civil servant team.

Employed within the Logistics Squadron, it will be the individual’s duty to ensure a wide array of tasks, including equipment and personnel movements are completed professionally and on time. In accordance with the Working Time Directive, tasks are to be completed legally. In this customer facing role, the successful applicant will be providing a high-quality service to all personnel and be the face of the Mechanical Transport Flight.

Drivers must be able to carry out the following:


  • Occasionally undertaking journeys that will involve being away from their Unit overnight; a subsistence allowance can be claimed for such occurrences through prior approval.
  • During periods of intensive workload, drivers may be required to work overtime. Mainly during shift handover and periods of Snow and Ice clearance operations in winter periods; Individuals will be paid at the current overtime rate.
  • Complying with all aspects of Civilian Road Traffic Regulations when driving Service vehicles, including vehicles hired/leased by, or on behalf of the MOD.
  • Ensuring that any vehicle under their control is correctly loaded, and a load check is carried out, prior to departing the Unit.
  • Allowing sufficient time to prepare the vehicle, carry out first line maintenance and depart from Mechanical Transport on time for each.
  • Ensuring that any vehicle they are detailed to drive/operate is free from potential Foreign Object Debris (FOD) items and returned clean inside and out and free from FOD.
  • Cleaning/valeting and preparing vehicles, as detailed by MT Control.
  • Ensuring that they have clean and suitable clothing, ready at the workplace for any unforeseen tasks that may occur during their period of duty.
  • Once trained, provide camp area ambulance driver cover for the Regional Medical Centre (RMC).
  • Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) all times when required to do so or as detailed in the task specific Risk Assessment.
  • Contacting MT Control upon arrival at their destination. This is to ensure there are no diversions or collections required prior to returning to RAF Leeming.
  • Reporting to the CES Store, to complete tasks at the direction of SNCO/JNCO CES or nominated deputy.
  • Drivers are required to undertake initial and refresher training, mandated Training Courses as directed by the MOD, Civil Service and RAF Leeming Policy. These Courses maybe undertaken at off base locations of other training providers. Personnel are to remain current and competent on all vehicle types that they are qualified to drive and operate as detailed in their Driver Training Record (F/MT601), this includes annual refresher training.
  • Completing any additional tasks including MT Control tasks as directed by the MTO, to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of the MT Flight.
