Job Purpose
In the role of Metallurgist, you will oversee the day to day running of the Metallurgy Analysis in the UK Laboratory, providing analytical and technical assistance to customers and sales representatives.
Job Responsibilities
- Accountable for the day to day running of Metallurgy Analysis section and related functions within the UK Laboratory.
- Ensure information and results provided to customers and colleagues are accurate and dispatched in a timely manner.
- Ensure the necessary analytical methods, reagents and equipment are available for proper completion of metallurgical analysis checks.
- Accountable for the safe and appropriate storage and disposal of customer support metallurgy samples and reagents.
- Accountable for operation, maintenance and repair of metallurgy instrumentation operated by the UK Laboratory.
- Support customers by visits or in-house analysis to assist in any metallurgy issues they may have.
- Ensuring all environmental and health & safety requirements are met within the Metallurgy Analysis section of the UK Laboratory.
- Liaise with colleagues within and outside of the laboratory and assisting where required to ensure smooth running of the department.
- Transferring Knowledge (training) of colleagues on metallurgy analysis techniques as and when required.
- General laboratory administration, support and improvement, including answering the telephones and responding/directing calls appropriately.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Degree in Chemistry or similar.
Skills
- Good general chemical understanding.
- Knowledge of proprietary processes and analysis methods.
- Working knowledge of metallurgy instrumentation, including some aspects of repair and method development.
- A good understanding of business processes.
- A good level of numeracy ability.
- Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and handle any situation with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to work autonomously or within the team.
- Time management.
- Adaptability and positive ‘can-do’ attitude.
- Working knowledge of Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, SAP and other laboratory applications/software.
Competencies
-
Experience of, or the willingness to learn:
operation of microscopic instrumentation including Optical & SEM/EDX;
a large number of sample preparation methods and functional tests necessary in a busy laboratory serving a post sales analytical service. - Flexibility to work as required in any of a range of roles in our busy laboratory.
- Willing to visit customer sites to aid with trouble shooting of production issues.
- Positive attitude to working in a team environment to provide a continuously improving service to our customers.
