Barts Health NHS Trust - Band 3 – Medical Laboratory Assistant - Hematology & Blood Transfusion

The post holder is expected to work as part of a busy Blood Sciences Laboratory team to undertake routine pathology work and provide general laboratory assistance. Core duties involve receipting and processing of diagnostic specimens, using the laboratory IT to input and extract information.
The role will involve basic laboratory procedures and pre-analytical processing of diagnostic specimens, analyser operation and troubleshooting tasks. The post holder may be required to attend any Trust site in the performance of duties within this job description. Clerical work, checking stocks and supplies and a variety of other laboratory duties are required to provide support to the Biomedical Scientists. Following standard operating procedures to ensure good laboratory practice. In-house training is provided where the postholder will be expected to demonstrate satisfactory competence upon completion. The post holder will also offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist the Department in the provision of a high quality service.
The post holder might be required to work across the Barts Trust at all of the hospitals (Royal London, St Bartholomew's, Newham, Whipps Cross and Mile End) at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract, which may entail travel and working at different hospitals.

- To receive, sort and number all incoming samples and request forms.
- To receive, distribute and process samples and goods.
- To check and verify all patient sample demographics
- To centrifuge and separate blood samples, aliquot urine collections and to store all samples according to departmental guidelines.
- To collect specimens from ward and clinic areas.
- Undertake specimen preparation (centrifugation, sample separation, sort label ) To sort specimens for storage, retrieval and disposal.
- To monitor outstanding work and check back lists in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- To carry out general laboratory cleaning, clearing and tidying duties as required.
- To have good keyboard and IT skills to use the laboratory information systems.
- To enter details from each specimen and request form into laboratory information systems.
