The Department of Haematology comprises a team of people who are committed to delivering an efficient, high quality diagnostic service. It is a busy, friendly department. We have an excellent reputation as a specialist laboratory and provide a range of testing. In addition we also provide the Trust with a Blood Bank service.

We are looking for one person to join the team for 9 months as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA). MLAs undertake a range of roles including the collection of blood from babies and children, the preparation of samples for analysis within the laboratory, and the completion of tasks relating to quality management system.

The role requires someone with a caring and professional approach. It is essential that the individual is able to communicate effectively and is physically able to collect blood from patients. The ability to multitask and prioritise workload is crucial.

Weekend and Bank Holiday morning work will also be required, for an additional payment, and as part of a rota.

Working hours:
35 hours per week, 09:30 until 17:00 Monday to Friday.

  • Provide a comprehensive capillary service for the department.
  • Take receipt of and prepare a wide range of clinical specimens for analysis.
  • Carry out basic diagnostic tests and laboratory support activities
  • Input of data into Computer Systems
  • Provide administrative support including stocktaking

To provide a capillary phlebotomy service to the wards of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Jessop Wing of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and also to various OP/GP patients via the Haematology OPD. This will involve collection of capillary blood samples for laboratory analysis from children and infants of all ages and in all states of health.

To take receipt of a wide range of clinical specimens for analysis, ensuring correct barcode labelling and matching with request forms

To input confidential patient information into the laboratory computer system ensuring accuracy of patient demographics and tests requested. Create clinical notepads where appropriate.

To carry out basic laboratory analytical procedures ensuring that all health and safety protocols are followed where relevant in relation to the comfort and care of the patient.

Dealing with all reception and telephone queries from other departments, other hospitals throughout the UK, General Practitioners, visitors, patient’s parents and contractors. Book appointments where appropriate.

Repackaging and redirection of samples by porter, vacuum tube, taxi, post and courier. This can be on site or throughout the UK.

Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
