Hours: Full time- 37.5 hours per week, Mon-Fri 9:30 am-5 pm

The genetics department have many temporary opportunities for Lab Assistants to join their team for a minimum of six months.
The purpose of the Lab Assistant post is to provide technical support for a wide range of Laboratory Service teams within the Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Laboratory.
Roles and Responsibilities include:
- Sample processing
- Preparation and maintenance of cell cultures
- Harvesting cell cultures, slide making and staining to produce chromosome preparations
- Input of data into the laboratory computer system
- Processing certain stages of fluorescence in situ hybridisation slides (FISH)
- Handling and distributing stock
- Preparing laboratory & clinical waste for appropriate disposal
- Contributing to the maintenance, cleaning and monitoring of laboratory safety cabinets, centrifuges, fridges, freezers and water baths.
· Maintaining a cleaning schedule for laboratory benches and sinks
To be successful in applying for this role you will need:
· Minimum 2 A levels or equivalent in science related subjects or relevant laboratory experience.
· Laboratory experience including an understanding of laboratory procedures and health and safety regulations
· Experience of using different IT systems
· Ability to plan and prioritise workload according to deadlines
· Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in an accurate, methodical way
· Ability to work under own initiative as well as working as part of a team
· Good verbal and written communication skills
· Able to work to standard operating procedures and contribute to their review and implementation
· Good manual dexterity and coordination
