We are looking for a Medical Imaging assistant (MIA) with the skills and personality to complement our established ultrasound team of sonographers, radiologists and MIAs. The ideal candidate will be a team player with excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, good attendance record, empathetic manner and good organisational skills.

Computer literacy/ experience are essential, as is a full clean driving licence.

The post requires a degree of self -motivation and the ability to cope with sensitive/ emotionally charged situations. Maintaining patient confidentiality is of vital importance.

The post will be based at Leighton Hospital, with rotation to Victoria Infirmary, Alsager Health Centre and Nantwich Health Centre, therefore you must have your own transport.

The post involves some weekend working (on rotation), but the hours are mainly 08:45 - 16:45, with very occasional earlier starts.

Your broad remit will include: -

  • Meeting and greeting patients and their families.
  • Answering phone queries
  • Preparation of appointment lists
  • Ensuring the clinical rooms are kept clean and tidy
  • Routine weekly quality assurance on ultrasound equipment
  • Registering patients on the radiology information system
  • Acting as a chaperone within the scan room
  • Close interaction with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensuring clinical rooms are fully stocked
  • Comforting and supporting patients.
  • Assisting in clinical procedures, including interventional lists.
  • Generally assisting where and when required
  • Organisation of equipment maintenance program

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond.

The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1991 and became a Foundation Trust in April 2008.

  • Assist the sonographers and radiologists within the ultrasound rooms
  • Work in accordance with the departmental roster, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability when required to cover sickness/ absence.
  • Ensure that an appropriate level of cleanliness is maintained, and that the relevant materials, stocks and equipment required are available and ready for use at all times for all clinical procedures. Cleanse, clear and restore equipment and environment after procedures and at the end of the session.
  • Ensure Covid- 19 procedures are followed at all times.
  • Wear appropriate PPE when required according to departmental protocol
  • Undertake specialist disinfection of the intracavity transducers using the Tristel Trio wipe system, ensuring full and accurate.
  • Ensure that the ultrasound machine is clean and that all cables are correctly threaded over the cable guides. Check all transducers are securely placed in their holders after every scan.
  • Change refuse sacks regularly.
  • Check daily for linen supplies.
  • Carry out weekly Quality Assurance checks on the ultrasound equipment.
  • Ensure that consumables are adequately topped up in the scan rooms on a daily basis, and replenish to an acceptable level regularly. Alert the relevant person if there is a problem with supplies.
  • Independently (after training) use the Radiology Information System (currently Soliton) and Trust PACS (Picture Archive Communication System).
  • Use Soliton and to actively assist the workflow within the scan room.
  • Register patients who are not already booked on to the system
  • Check images are on PACS when asked to do so
  • Meet and greet patients from the waiting rooms, and check identification details in accordance with the departmental policy (name, address and date of birth)
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues in order to facilitate effective care and treatment.
  • Support patients prior, during and after ultrasound procedures
  • Assist patients on and off the examination couch and help to position them appropriately for their scan, ensuring that privacy and dignity is maintained at all times. Assist less able/ anxious patients to move and turn on the couch when required, taking into account any physical or psychological limitations.
  • Telephone wards to inform them of patient appointment times.
  • Employ safe manual handling techniques at all times.
  • Provide help, reassurance and comfort when patients are worried, frightened or upset, and talk to and listen to patients when appropriate.
  • Manage workloads efficiently and effectively, providing practical support to the sonographers and radiologists to ensure a smooth workflow through the ultrasound rooms. Check clinic lists every morning, ascertaining where slots are available for adhoc patients.
  • Assist in interventional procedures when required.
  • Answer the telephone and take messages, advising the sonographers of any urgent action as soon as possible.
  • Communicate any problems that occur throughout the list to the sonographer/ radiologist.·
  • Promote communication and service quality by attending and participating in departmental meetings.
  • Use initiative to assist in covering lists in the event of a colleague absence.
  • Undertake miscellaneous, relevant duties as requested by the Sonographers and Superintendent Sonographer.
