Job summary:
Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
The Healthcare Assistant will also assist in reception/administrative tasks that may be required which contribute to improving patient care/experience.
Aim
To provide and maintain a professional, reliable, welcoming and friendly service to the patients at all times. This person must be capable of performing accurately and in a timely fashion, any function requested of them within the scope of this post, to assist the practice to run efficiently. Excellent team working and communication skills are essential.
Duties and responsibilities:
New patient health checks
ECG recording
Phlebotomy/Venepuncture
BP Testing/Monitoring
Respiratory eg. Spirometry-Peak Flow-Reversibility-Inhaler Technique
Dressings including Leg Ulcer/Tissue Viability care/compression bandaging
Administer Flu/Pnuemococcal vaccinations and B12 injections
Ear Syringing under guidance
Action Practice Notes and Emails in a timely fashion
Diabetic Reviews including diabetic foot checks
Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection
Urinalysis
Removal of Sutures
Chaperoning duties
Undertake patient recalls
Respond appropriately to requirements of QoF both on an ad hoc (via clinical system reminders) and planned (via recalls) basis
Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses
Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment
Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
Monitoring, tidying, clearing and re-stocking of consulting rooms
Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients’ health and well-being
Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
Record all consultations/patient contacts in the clinical system in accordance with practice policies and ensuring that clinical READ coding is accurately entered.
Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being
Assisting with administrative and/or reception duties that attribute to improving patient care/experience e.g making appointments, ordering supplies as needed, repeat prescriptions etc
Visiting housebound/vulnerable patients at home as requested.

Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines .

Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards

Developing the role to its full extended, incorporating the whole range or processes and procedures that are deemed able to be carried out by a Primary Care HCA

FLEXIBILITY

Flexibility in the duties undertaken and the hours worked are essential to achieve the objectives of a smooth running practice. The post holder is required to carry out any duties that fall within the scope of this role, that may reasonably be requested by the Partners or the Practice Management team and that relate to the efficiency and smooth running of the Practice
