The Pharmacy Department have an opportunity to recruit a Pharmacist Assistant for admissions wards in the Trust, you will become part of a unique team based within the Acute Medical Unit to collaborate with colleagues on delivering and developing pharmaceutical practice. The Admissions Team supplies medicines to A&E, Acute Medical Units, Same Day Emergency Care, for both inpatients and outpatients.

Pharmacy assistants are vital members of the pharmacy team who work closely with the ward teams within Admissions areas. This post is to support our dedicated pharmacy admissions team, where we have a satellite pharmacy. The post-holder will help to maintain stock, help with moving patients’ own medication to wards, dispense for patients and support good medicines management. You will also spend some time within the main hospital dispensary.
If you have already gained your NVQ2 in Pharmacy Services and would like to provide a great service to the patients of the NNUH then we’d love to receive your application. Full training will be given in all areas to ensure you can provide the best service possible.
You will be self-motivated, able to work independently and be capable of working in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate the Trusts PRIDE values. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and be willing to learn. You will be expected to use computer-based systems and therefore have appropriate computer skills.
The post-holder will ideally work full time, including weekends (maximum 1 in 4 weekends) and bank holidays. We would consider alternative flexible working patterns dependent on the applicant’s requirements.

- To produce labels for dispensed drugs using the JAC computer system for inpatient, outpatient, community unit, self-medication wallets, TTOs, CDs and HIV pharmaceuticals against the relevant previously clinically checked prescription or request.
- To dispense medication for inpatient, outpatient, community unit, self-medication wallets, TTOs, CDs and HIV pharmaceuticals against the relevant previously clinically checked prescription or request in line with departmental policies and procedures and the Medicines Act 1968 using the JAC computer system.
- To participate in the maintenance of the CD register in line with departmental procedures.
- To participate in the regular stock checks for CDs against the CD register to ensure accurate reconciliation.
- To use the PAS computer system to check patient details when necessary.
- To check the ‘to follow’ situation on owing prescriptions and dispense where needed and organise carriage to the patient.
- To accurately take requests for medication from the community units following departmental procedures.
- To ensure dispensed items are ready for collection by contract drivers for deliver and assist with any queries they may have.
- To liaise with Pharmacy Preparative Services concerning availability of batch manufactured and extemporaneous products.
- To screen and field telephone calls and enquiries as appropriate.
