Medical Assistant
- (3237620)The MA provides and/or coordinates the delivery of a variety of patient services in Ambulatory Services under the direction of the Practice Manager in the Multispecialty Surgery Clinic. Patient services are both clinical and non-clinical in nature and include direct patient care activities such as taking vital signs and documenting pertinent information into the patient’s medical record. Experience with sterile fields and assisting with minor procedures preferred.
The MA interacts with patients, clinicians, RNs, and other support staff. The MA must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Essential Functions:
- Greets, directs, and assists all persons arriving at the Department. Answers telephone and receives and relays messages accurately and in a timely fashion.
- Functions as a liaison with other departments.
- Acts as an advocate for patients – consistently maintaining a positive customer service approach.
- Assists scheduling and registration of patients. Assesses accurate charges for patient services.
- Takes vital signs and reports abnormal readings to the nurse or physician and records data appropriately.
- Performs EKGs.
- Facilitates patient flow under the direction of the Practice Manager or healthcare provider.
- Prepares necessary equipment needed by nurse or physician.
- Completes documentation of care activities to comply with various regulatory agency requirements.
- Transports patients as needed.
- Ensures that all needed care and charge documents are completed.
- Completes orders of prescriptions in EPIC.
- Maintains stock and inventory of supplies in patient exam and treatment areas.
- Receives and appropriately reports patient information.
- Assists providers during procedures as directed.
- Organizes files, records, and other patient information.
- Performs clerical duties and assigned tasks as needed.
- Transports equipment, supplies, pharmaceuticals, and specimens to and from other departments.
- Enters orders into EPIC.
- Enters data into appropriate documentation system.
- Enters medication lists with ultimate review by RN/MD.
- Obtains patient test results from EPIC.
- Prepares patient’s medical record for the following day, as needed.
- Participates in yearly MA I competencies.

Education and Experience
- Required: Completion of a formal, post-secondary clinical training program (ex. Medical Assistant, EMT, Paramedic, Nursing Assistant) OR Matriculation in, or graduate of, an Associates or Bachelors degree program in nursing (RN) OR prior Medical Assistant experience required. Nursing students must have completed fundamentals of nursing, skills lab, and at least one clinical rotation in medical / surgical nursing.
- Preferred: Certificate, Diploma or Associates Degree in Medical Assisting from an accredited program.
Certification/Training
- CPR training preferred
Physical Environment:
The Medical Assistant works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as blood. Caring for patients also involves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements. Other duties may include general cleaning with exposure to dirt, odors, cramped quarters, etc.
