Job summary
We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant to join our practice nursing team, caring for patients in our rural GP surgery. The nursing team carry out routine diagnostic & caring procedures ranging from taking blood pressure readings & blood samples, diabetic & respiratory care, to wound care and providing advice & guidance on managing common medical conditions. The Healthcare Assistant role is a key member of this team, supporting the nurses by carrying out key tasks that help us to deliver outstanding patient care.
We are looking for 35 hours a week, with a salary in the range £18,205 to £21,239 subject to experience, plus NHS pension.
Main duties of the job
Working under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurses and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care. The post will also include some administrative duties.
Induction training and on-going training and development will be provided under the supervision of a lead Practice Nurse.

Caldbeck Surgery is located on the northern edge of the Lake District National Park, and serves 4,400 patients over 100 square kilometres of rural Cumbria.
We have a team of 26 people including 5 GP partners, and as a GP training practice we also have GP registrar(s) working with us. We are part of the Keswick & Solway PCN, which covers 44,000 patients from the Solway coast to Keswick & Carlisle, and we are working towards green practice certification and a paper-free operation.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential skills for the role
- Highly literate, with good written English and ability to understand or learn technical medical terminology
- Ability to quickly learn how to use new software eg clinical systems
- Able to work unsupervised and prioritise own workload, whilst supporting team members as required
- Able to diligently follow up actions to ensure completion
- An understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality
- An ability to use own judgement, resourcefulness, common sense and local knowledge, to respond to patients enquiries and requests
- An understanding and acceptance of ones capabilities and awareness of own limitations
- Able to work flexible
- Knowledge & experience of GP clinical systems, ideally Emis Web
- Experience of healthcare procedures
- Experience of working in a healthcare role in an NHS setting
We will provide in-house/ on the job or online training for any extra skills required by the successful candidate.
JOB SUMMARY:

A practice uniform and name badge must be worn at all times.
Clinical Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to have a sound knowledge of.
1. Venepuncture taking blood samples
2. Blood Pressure recording including 24hr ABPM & interpretation
3. Wound care
4. Carrying out foot checks
5. Giving flu, pneumo, shingles and B12 injections
6. Advice, diet, exercise & weight management
7. Carry out INR checks
8. Removal of clips/ sutures
9. Chaperoning duties
10. Cleaning and preparing equipment returned from patients for re-issue
11. Dry dressings
12. ECG recording including fitment of 24hr monitoring equipment
13. Laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses: ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
14. Measure and record routine height, weight, BP, urine analysis & basic observations as required
15. Sharps bins: ensure bins are ready for collection
16. Monitoring and recording vaccine/cold chain storage
And work towards competence in the list of duties below over time, depending on prior healthcare experience. Any necessary training will be given. The candidate will be encouraged to work towards achieving the Care Certificate if not already held.
1. Smoking cessation/ alcohol awareness advice
2. Giving nasal flu treatments
3. Foot/ leg care wash, cream, hosiery
4. Foreign body removal (ticks)
5. Assist at minor operations and injuries: prepare room and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs
Administration and general responsibilities
- Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Ensure the clinical computer system is kept up to date with accurate details recorded
- Attend and participate in practice meetings and training as required
- Assist in promoting and maintaining your own and other health, safety and security as defined in the practice Health & Safety Policy
Any other delegated duties considered appropriate to the post
Experience
Essential
- We would consider candidates who are already working in a healthcare role with experience of Phlebotomy.
