Bay Area Retina Associates is a group practice of highly experienced ophthalmologists specializing in cutting edge retinal treatments. BARA has 8 convenient locations in the Bay Area and has been in the industry for almost 40 years.
Job Summary:
Test and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and diseases, prepares and closes exam rooms at beginning and end of day, performs drug and supply inventory and stocking, supports multiple physicians across multiple offices, traveling as needed. Position will obtain consents, authorizations, and schedule follow-up appointments as needed. Position will perform scribing duties and assist with clinical trials as requested. Position may help with telephone appointments, checks patients in, out, and schedules follow-up appointments. Insurance verification, authorizations, eligibility, and co-pay collection. Cash handling and end of day reconciliation when needed.
Essential Functions:
- Test patient’s far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, visual field, and tonometry and enter into EMR. Dilate eyes. Perform Optical Coherence Tomography (OCTs) and Fundus Autofluorescence (FAFs)
- Obtain and record new patient history and/or review established patient history. Scribe all results of exam in EMR as well as other pertinent information relayed by the patient and doctor.
- Room patients and assist doctor with numbing, rinsing, and procedure set up.
- Open and close exam rooms at the beginning and end of each day. Sterilize equipment. Restock rooms and perform drug and medical supply inventory, ordering as needed.
- Have knowledge of common diagnoses, procedures, and instrumentation. Obtain consents for minor procedures and/or payment assistance programs.
- Obtain authorizations for procedures or injections prior to or during visit.
- Obtain BCVA certification to assist in clinical trials program, if directed as requested.
Other Responsibilities: Other duties as assigned by supervisor, Director of Operations, or physician.
Accountabilities: Maintaining patient satisfaction by providing professional, friendly service. Satisfactory completion of assigned competencies, to be completed within 3 months of hire and annual thereafter.

Requirements:- Excellent patient relations. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent communication.
- One year of past medical clinic experience preferred but not required
Education Required or Equivalent:
- Minimum high school diploma. College degree or continuing education courses desirable.
Physical Standards, including lifting and pushing requirements:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of scheduled shift or more, be able to frequently move about the office to direct patients, access office supplies, and equipment, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to communicate with patients to convey necessary medical and financial information and document accurately in EMR and practice management system.
Travel requirements:
- Travel between 3 home offices may be required. Periodic travel to other clinic locations as needed.
Equipment:
Position requires the use of telephone and office equipment such as computers, copier, fax, and scanner. Position requires the use of medical equipment such as exam chairs, imaging equipment, pharmaceutical refrigerators, and diagnostic testing equipment.
