Job Description

Location: Mornington Crescent, Greater London House, NW1
Department: Corporate Affairs
Reports to: Head of External Relations

THE TEAM

The Corporate Affairs team has a vital role to play in achieving ASOS’ vision to become the go-to destination for fashion-loving 20-somethings. We are a small team of experts covering external and internal communications and leading engagement with our key stakeholders. We exist to support the delivery of ASOS’ strategy by increasing understanding of, and belief in, our plan; by protecting and proactively enhancing our reputation; by building effective relationships with our stakeholders; and by communicating in a cohesive and compelling way.

THE ROLE

Reporting into the Head of External Affairs, this role will support the delivery of the corporate affairs strategy through proactive and reactive media communications and engagement. While the role has a broad remit across a wide range of topics and issues, a major focus is financial communications, corporate story-telling, and promoting ASOS’ fashion credentials.

This is a busy press office environment where you will have responsibility for managing day-to-day media enquiries. You will work alongside the Corporate Affairs Manager, who leads on sustainability comms and strategic projects, as well as our external agency, to deliver a calendar of activity to generate positive coverage in traditional, social and digital media. In addition to maintaining strong external relationships with trade and national media, developing excellent internal relationships will be vital to unearth and communicate good news stories and identify and tackle potential risk areas.

What you’ll be doing…

  • Managing ASOS’ corporate media relations activity and support financial calendar communications.
  • Lead ASOS’ response to reactive media issues, managing the day-to-day press office and responding to media enquiries (including on-call cover outside core working hours as part of team rota).
  • Design, develop and execute proactive integrated campaigns – working collaboratively across Corporate Affairs to generate maximum impact across audiences.
  • Create engaging and high-quality media materials, including press releases, spokesperson briefings and Q&As.
  • Manage ongoing media engagement and relationship building, owning specific trade and national media relationships as required.
  • Plan, draft and publish content on owned corporate channels (@ASOS_news Twitter account, news releases section of the PLC website, blogs and LinkedIn), working with the wider team to source good news stories from across the business.
  • Monitor the media across all outlets - including traditional media, broadcast and social – identifying risks and opportunities, and using this insight to drive our approach.
  • Support a professional approach to external crisis comms planning and execution, ensuring close alignment across all internal and external audiences.
  • Develop internal network of stakeholders to identify reputational risks and proactive media opportunities.
  • Work effectively with ASOS’ external media relations agency and Corporate Affairs colleagues.

Qualifications

We’d love to meet, someone with…

  • Significant experience of media relations and corporate communications in an issues-rich press office environment for a high-profile business or organisation, including financial comms expertise.
  • Track record of delivering proactive PR activity and campaigns that deliver on-message positive coverage.
  • Proven ability to form strong and effective working relationships with journalists in the trade, regional, national, and broadcast media. Existing relationships with fashion and retail media contacts is desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to make complex or technical topics newsworthy and adapt writing to different channels and audiences.
  • An eye for creative content and exceptional attention to detail – being able to produce accurate written work and work under pressure to manage fast moving issues and deliver to tight deadlines.
  • A digital-mindset, who has a love for social media and stays ahead of the latest trends, best practice and emerging technologies – making sure we think across our channels.
  • Good influencing skills and a demonstrable ability to develop an internal network in large and complex organisations, including senior business leaders.
  • An interest and understanding of the fashion and online retail sectors and the reputational issues ASOS faces.
  • Experience in issues management is essential and expertise in crisis communications is desirable.
  • Experience of media training or briefing spokespeople for media interviews.
  • High personal standards and ambitious, equally comfortable working collaboratively within a small team and driving projects independently.
  • High ethical standards and experience of working with confidential commercial information.
