Wyman-Gordon Limited is part of U.S. based Precision Castparts, a world-leading producer of complex forgings and high performance nickel-based alloys and superalloys for aerospace, power generation and general industrial applications.
Our Livingston facility manufactures nickel-based, titanium and steel alloy components primarily for the aerospace sector.
We are currently seeking an energetic and ambitious graduate to join our organisation at our plant in Livingston to help us develop future leaders in Quality / Materials that will drive Wyman-Gordon’s growth in the coming years.
Materials Engineering (Metallurgy) key responsibilities of the position
· To assist with the identification, development and implementation of operational and product improvements.
· To ensure continuity of production of quality parts ensuring customer satisfaction is achieved.
· To ensure that quality, cost and delivery are continually improved.
· To ensure that all work meets customer (internal and external) expectations on delivery and quality.
· To be flexible within the Materials and Quality, Engineering roles; adaptable and move between the required engineering disciplines.
KEY DUTIES
To work as part of a team in the Metallurgy Department. Must be capable of working on own initiative, often to tight deadlines whilst maintaining good attention to detail, cost effectiveness, ease of manufacture and a particular focus on quality.
· To raise and control fixed process documents to define the critical processing sequence for new parts and submit for customer approval.
Materials Engineering.
· To provide technical support to the production areas of the company.
· To support the proving-out of new parts in the forge and assist in implementation of any changes to design or to the process to improve the product or process efficiency.
· To prepare and maintain Methods of Manufacture and Heat treatment Instruction sheets.
· To troubleshoot any non-conformance situations that may arise during forging or heat treatment operations and propose solutions in conjunction with the Quality Manager
· To provide Materials related advice to Purchasing departments or customer contacts when requested.
· To liaise with raw material suppliers to ensure that material quality requirements are consistently met.
· To manage and take responsibility for the smooth introduction of new parts into the company from receipt of order to the delivery of the first parts.
· To partake in simultaneous engineering exercises with Customers.
· To implement and maintain Total Productive Manufacturing and Lean manufacturing techniques such as T.P.M, Asset Care, and 5’s, to keep the work area in a clean and orderly condition.
· To work to achieve the performance measures identified within the team and unit and help to aid two-way communications.
· To identify own training needs with the Materials Engineering Manager and to assist with training others once competent.
· To undertake additional training in line with the company needs.
· To undertake any other role within skill capability in own or other area as specified by the Materials Engineering Manager that may be required to fulfil the needs of the business.
Value Engineering
· To advise Production Engineering on material heat treatment and testing requirements for customer enquiries.
· To help design the optimum forging shape to give the most cost effective forging.
· To determine the optimum process route for the manufacture of the component.
· To liaise with the customer if required.
New Part Validation
· To support validation testing for new parts to satisfy customer requirements and to create a full report for the customer.
Quality
· To ensure that agreed customer requirements are achieved through maintaining product conformity and that customers receive a high standard of service at all times.
· To maintain, improve and drive forward shop floor processes by engaging in a quality management system structured to ensure products and services meet high quality standards.
· To undertake internal and external audits to ensure product and process conformity.
· To have a thorough and focused approach to investigating and problem solving.
· To initiate actions to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformance relating to product, process and quality system.
· Identify and record any problems relating to product, process and quality system.
· Control further processing and delivery of non-conforming product until the deficiency or unsatisfactory condition has been corrected.
· To initiate and drive close-out of actions to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformance (product, process or quality system).
· To undertake internal QMS audits to ensure product and process conformity and deal with customer and supplier audits on site.
· Support process owners in review and update of process procedures and instructions.
· To prepare certification and shipping documents.
· To archive records.
· To liaise with customers, suppliers, third parties and other companies within the group.
EXPERIENCE
· Degree qualified in a materials related field i.e. metallurgy, materials science
KNOWLEDGE
· Ability to work in a fast paced environment with minimal supervision
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers
· Negotiation skills
· Demonstrated organisational and multi-tasking skills
· Highly developed computer skills with experience in using the Microsoft Office Suite of products in particular outstanding skills in Excel
