Materials Engineer IMaterials Engineer I
The Materials Engineer works on Research & Development (R&D) projects related to materials, design, and processes, with focus on mid- and long-term team and business goals. Performs innovative research. Works in alignment with other members and teams’ part of R&D, to create new products and systems, improve line efficiency, quality, or enable other projects which add value to Niagara’s core business.
Job Description
- Design and execute testing of new formulations, materials, designs, or processes as part of R&D projects.
- Collects, analyzes, and reports data from research experiments and line trials in an effective manner.
- Leads development projects and builds effective teams to deliver results in a stage-gate process.
- Maintain existing laboratory equipment and design or develop new systems required for testing purpose.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians within the team and at organization level.
- Ensures project documentation and clear communication between all stakeholders.
- Presents and communicates research results internally and externally.
- Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships with suppliers and other external collaborators.

Competencies
- Experience with analytical laboratory equipment (GC-MS, HPLC, UV-Vis, FT-IR, Raman, Material Strength Testers, Rheometers, DSC, IV testers, Spectrophotometers, etc.).
- Injection molding or blow molding experience. Experience in both is preferred.
- Knowledge of DOE and advanced statistics tools (Minitab, SAS, etc.).
- Advanced data analysis capabilities (MATLAB, Python programming etc.).
- Experience in using data acquisition systems.
- Project management: successfully plans and completes projects in a timely fashion.
- Organizational skills: experience in research lab organization and maintenance.
- Problem Solving: identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
- Oral Communication: speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; demonstrates presentation skills.
- Written Communication: writes clearly and informatively; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.
- Supervisory experience: has managed interns, laboratory assistants, and junior engineers.
- Experience in writing technical proposals for project funding (to both internal and external groups/agencies).
- Microsoft Office Products.
Work Experience/KSA’s
- Minimum Required:
- 2-4 years – Experience in Polymers or Chemistry, Materials testing, and processing.
- 2-4 years –Experience in Position, Materials Engineer, Chemist, Project Engineer, Research Assistant.
- 2-4 years – Experience working with undergraduate researchers, interns, and lab assistants.

- Preferred:
- 3-5 years – Experience in Materials Engineering or Polymer Chemistry, testing and characterizations, and processing of polymers.
- 3-5 years –Experience in Position, Jr. Engineer, Chemist II, Research Engineer, Research Assistant.
- 3-5 years – Experience in working with graduate researchers, interns, lab assistants, and junior engineers.
- experience may include a combination of work experience and education
Lifting Requirements:
- 40 lbs. For example, must be physically capable to change injection molds and resin in lab or production equipment.
Physical Demands:
- Travel up to 15%. Some work in hot, cold, or confined production environments.
- Must be able to operate tools used when changing molds and operating R&D equipment.
Education
- Minimum Required:
- Bachelor's Degree. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical or Materials engineering and other related fields or equivalent experience
- Preferred:
- Master's Degree. in Materials Science/Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience. Materials Science and Engineering exposure. Polymer processing or science and Packaging training.
Foreign Language
- Required: None Required
- Preferred: Minimum Professional Proficiency, Spanish
