The Company and the Role:
Wessex Cancer Trust is a medium-sized charity which offers support to people affected by cancer, their families and friends. The charity operates in Hampshire, IOW and Dorset.
Voluntary donations from fundraising and income from 5 charity shops help fund services which are delivered in 4 cancer support centres, in hospitals and the community throughout the region.
The Trust relies on voluntary income to fund its work, raising money through fundraising activities and via a trading subsidiary of charity shops.
They are now seeking a Marketing and Communications Manager. Reporting into the
Director of Fundraising and Marketing this is a fantastic opportunity for a highly motivated
individual to lead the charity’s marketing and communications activities .
You will manage the team in delivering high quality and effective marketing and comms
activity which builds the Wessex Cancer Trust brand to help meet targets in client, staff and
volunteer recruitment, retail sales, fundraising donations and fundraising events and
campaign recruitment.
The role is full – time ( 37.5 hours per week) The place of work is flexible and can be a hybrid of working at home (usually around 40% of working time) and approximately 60% of the postholder’s time will be spent working and attending meetings in the charity’s Head Office in Chandlers Ford.
Key Features of the Role:
· Lead the development and implementation of a multi-channel marketing and comms strategy, which addresses key organisational objectives (primarily promotion of services to recruit clients, and income generation).
· Oversee the development and delivery of marketing plans for specific events, activities and campaigns ensuring activity is integrated across all channels where appropriate; delegating some of these projects and personally leading on your own portfolio of projects. This includes for example, lottery and legacy promotion; event participant recruitment; client recruitment.
· Ensure the effective rollout of the refreshed brand, and be the brand guardian, providing the support and oversight to ensure the brand is used properly across the organisation.
· Line manage a team of 2 people (1 FT, 1 PT), providing leadership and expertise to coach and develop team members and efficiently manage workloads across the team, and by outsourcing to trusted marketing freelancers and agencies.
· Oversee budgets to ensure the most effective use of all marketing spend, negotiating with third party suppliers and advertisers to secure the best possible prices.
· Use data to analyse effectiveness of marketing activity and inform future campaigns; and report on the effectiveness of marketing campaigns against agreed KPIs.
· Ensure social media and digital channels, including the website, are monitored and updated regularly with urgent matters responded to in a timely fashion.
· Oversee the updating and development of the website, managing the relationship with the charity’s website designer/hosts.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- A confident marketer with a strong track record of leading successful marketing and communications activity.
- Able to demonstrate a creative approach to marketing challenges that achieves results.
- Proven ability to prioritise work and manage multiple priorities.
- Conscientious and pro-active problem-solver.
- Self-motivated to set and achieve ambitious marketing and comms KPIs.
- Experience of managing and monitoring budgets, and evaluating marketing spend.
- Resilience and keenness to work flexibly for an emotionally demanding organisation and sometimes sensitive environment.
· A full UK driving license and access to a reliable vehicle

The position is full -time, permanent working 37.5 hours per week. The charity (will consider
part-time job share or flexible working requests).
