About the Northcott

Exeter Northcott Theatre is proud to have been part of Exeter’s cultural life for more than 50 years, drawing audiences from across the city, the surrounding area and the wider region to see the very best local, national and international performing arts in our mid- scale auditorium (460 seats) on the campus of the University of Exeter. The Northcott also has a long history of making amazing things happen in the city centre and supporting creative activity in community spaces and settings, reflected in the acquisition of the city-centre Barnfield Theatre with its two smaller auditoria (280 seats and 60 seats), and the resurgence of the community engagement programme.

The Marketing Assistant is a key member of the Exeter Northcott Theatre’s friendly marketing team, supporting our Head of Marketing & Press, and working alongside our Marketing Officer and Press and Media Officer in the delivery of a busy portfolio of show-specific marketing campaigns as well as supporting the day-to-day marketing and publicity of our venues.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, a flair for creating engaging content, and a desire to work in a creative arts environment. They will be an excellent team player with strong planning and organisational skills, and the ability to demonstrate a pragmatic, focused approach to work.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £21,294 per annum, rising to £22,308 after one year.

Hours of Work: Full Time – contractual working hours are 39 per week

Typically Monday-Friday and including some evening and weekend work

Working Location: Northcott Theatre and Barnfield Theatre - with some remote working possible

Annual Leave: 32 days per annum (inclusive of bank holidays)

Closing Date: Sunday, June 18th 2023 – 5pm

Interviews will take place: June 29th and 30th

When we invite candidates to interview, we’ll ask if they have any access needs. We plan to hold in-person interviews at the Northcott Theatre and will reimburse any reasonable travel expenses you incur. Virtual interviews may be possible for candidates unable to attend in person.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working in our email marketing platform DotDigital to design marketing emails.
  • Using Spektrix (our ticketing software) to generate targeted mailing and emailing lists.
  • Monitoring and updating the theatre’s social media platforms, and supporting the team with writing engaging content, creating graphics and filming content as needed.
  • Writing copy and updating the theatre’s website, and proof-reading provided copy.
  • Gathering content and marketing materials from visiting companies and partners.
  • Supporting the marketing team in ordering print, buying online and social advertising, and booking other marketing activities with partners.
  • Working with the Marketing Officer on designing print and other advertising materials in InDesign.
  • Organising front-of-house displays and the distribution of printed materials.
  • Maintaining and storing materials for the Northcott Archive.
  • Tracking and reporting on marketing activity.
  • Contributing to the production of show programmes.
  • Contributing to the planning and delivery of promotional activity/events.

General

  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the theatre’s programme.
  • Attending staff meetings/training as required.
  • Representing the theatre at external meetings as required.
  • Deputising for the Marketing Officer or Press and Media Officer as required.
  • Adhering to Exeter Northcott Theatre policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of relevant GDPR legislation.
  • Any other duties which may be reasonably requested by the Head of Marketing & Press.

Person Specification

Please demonstrate how you meet these Essential and Desirable criteria when applying for this role, as this will be used in the shortlisting process:

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Strong copywriting and proof-reading skills.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to work across different software platforms.
  • A working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
  • A demonstrable excellent eye for graphic design.
  • Experience of generating effective digital content and a flair for using social media.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, and a willingness to pitch in.

Desirable

  • Experience within an arts marketing role and/or a relevant qualification.
  • Experience in one or more of Spektrix, Creative Cloud, WordPress, or an email marketing platform (e.g. MailChimp). Training will be given on all of these.
  • Experience of using paid-for social media advertising.
